AIBU to think if you're offered a job, you should be told when you'll be working?

I applied for a job that was advertised as having vacancies for both full and part time, all nights.

They rang me and told me it would be 3 nights one week, 4 the next, every second weekend off which I was happy with.

Had interview today and they asked what hours I wanted, I said what had been said on the phone, is that correct? And they were vague about it and said they didn't know.

They asked what hours I wanted and I said about 30-35, and that the hours mentioned on the phone were fine.

I've been offered it now, and I asked again for them to clarify the hours.

They said 37 hours and over 3 nights on, four off then four on 3 off-BUT they're unsure about that, and that the company are rethinking hours anyway and may restructure it soon.

I'm worried I'll take the job, and then they'll change the hours to something I'm unhappy with?

WWYD? AIBU to want to know what hours I'll be working long-term?

YABU and picky if you think you were expecting to dictate hours to a job that was clearly advertised as X nights on, X nights off in the first place.

YANBU to know what you're signing up for. Your contract will have to have working hours stated in it.

I would take the job but keep looking around in case something more organised turns up.

Dick did you even read the post properly? That isn't whats happening.

Shaniac · 11/11/2020 17:29

Yanbu at all. If they are suggesting the hours can be anything from 6 to 36 a week you need to know. Same thing has happened to me part time in a shop. Was told on the phone there was 8, 12, 18 and 30 hours a week. Was asked what hours i wanted i said 30 was told ok i was down as 30 but now ive been there 3 months i do 24 hours a week which is not at all ideal but as i have another 0 hour job i hope that picks up again.

If they change the hours later you look for a different job. Being simplistic, obviously, but you wouldn't be trapped.

Maybe the interviewer isn't involved in practicalities and that's why they were vague?

liveitwell Thanks, that's what I thought. shaniac sorry to hear that, that's what I am worried about.

I have a job already but this one is more what I want to do long-term so I do want to take it, but not if I'll end up doing different hours to what I thought I was getting in the first place-the hours were one main reason I was attracted to this job.

I mean, different hours may even be moresuited to me in theory, but I'd still like to know what they are!

dick I am not sure I understand your post-my issue is the original call said it would be X, the interviewers told me they weren't sure it would be X, when the call came telling me I was offered the job they said something slightly different (but still okay!) and now they're saying it may change to something different soon, and they don't know what.

Definitely ask about it before you sign the contract op, good luck
