£60 for hygienist

MozzchopsThirty · 11/11/2020 12:10

Seriously!!!!!

Was £40 before lockdown
Apparently this is due to PPE and having to have time to clean between appointments

AIBU to think that £60 to get my families teeth cleaned is ridiculous

For one person £60 is average, for more than one that’s cheap. Certainly cheaper than fixing issues.

Mrsjayy · 11/11/2020 12:38

My dentist put up a post recently saying unfortunately they wouldn't be taking hygienist appointments any time soon.

ChasingRainbows19 · 11/11/2020 12:38

My private dentist is charging £20 for PPE for aerosol generating procedures. I’m just happy to get my filing sorted. It’s not great but I get why, proper PPE is expensive.

Mrsjayy · 11/11/2020 12:39

It must be to do with the equipment?

Meepmeeep · 11/11/2020 12:42

I grudge paying £20 for it - wow.

Madcats · 11/11/2020 12:42

Mine cost £89 in a predominately NHS dentist. I suppose it is an incentive to floss!

ellenpartridge · 11/11/2020 12:43

Agree it seems unusually cheap!

shartsi · 11/11/2020 12:44

£60 is a bargain. Mine is now £130. Pre lockdown it was £50.

diddl · 11/11/2020 13:05

Here mine varies depending on how bad my teeth are!

Dowermouse · 11/11/2020 13:07

I wouldn't concider going to the dentist except for an emergency at the moment, surely you can all clean your own teeth for the time being and not risk the health of the hygienist?

Mrsjayy · 11/11/2020 13:14

Hygenists have bills and need to eat and if they are working why not go ? Most are self employed too so they need to work.

lurker101 · 11/11/2020 13:15

Think you’re going to have to tell us all where this cheap hygienist is 😂

MarshaBradyo · 11/11/2020 13:16

£40 for how many people in your family and how long did it take? I’m surprised they can charge so little.

2bazookas · 11/11/2020 13:19

@justanotherneighinparadise

My dentist wanted £140 odd from memory because of PPE. Previously it was £70. I found someone nearby who was charging £75 for Air Flow and I was delighted with it.
My dentist told me that if they use anything that produces aerosol from the patients mouth, then the entire room has to be deep cleaned afterwards. The cleaners have to wait two hours before they can enter the room to start cleaning (to reduce inhalation risks). This severely reduces the number of patients who can be treated per day, Plus, the cost of fresh PPE to be worn when treating each patient.

Surely if the hygienist is working and accepting appointments then they actually want people to come and spend money?
emilyfrost · 11/11/2020 14:08

YABU. £60pp is a reasonable amount.

Elieza · 11/11/2020 14:24

I paid £12 for a manual scale and polish from my dentist two weeks ago and £50 for a private filling with aerosol procedures. Think it was £5 more for PPE than pre-covid.

If the nhs would have done it it would have been £11 and £30 I think.

It just depends who you are with I think, he does a mix of nhs and private work. Cheaper than someone doing only private work. Shop around.

Hadalifeonce · 11/11/2020 14:26

My dentist has gone up by about £20, so it seems par for the course.
I assume it's for additional PPE plus they see fewer patients due to having to clean more thoroughly between appointments.

Bluethrough · 11/11/2020 14:33

Had mine done this morning, had to do a manual scale, otherwise its classed as AGP and they have to don full PPE, so took a lot longer.
£62.
There are no NHS practices taking patients, hasn't been for years, my DD, now at Uni, has never had an NHS dentist, despite it being her right to have one, we ve always had to pay or use the Dental School (if you can get in)

Dental and eye care are a disgrace in England.

ChasingRainbows19 · 11/11/2020 14:53

@Dowermouse A hygienist or dentist works in healthcare, they are exposed to lots of germs and infections all year around and they’ll be used to protecting themselves. They now have PPE like us hospital staff.

If a dentist or hygienist is willing to work (covid safe as possible) I’m happy to be a paying customer. Despite using all the tools at my disposal at home, I need regular cleaning to keep my gums healthy as they are prone to becoming inflamed if not kept up with. I’m not prepared to lose my teeth, covid isn’t going anywhere just yet. So we need to work around it. People need dental treatment regularly.

MozzchopsThirty · 11/11/2020 20:34

Oh my, I stand corrected!
Some of these prices are crazy

And obviously I meant £60 per person not for a whole family

Anyway I booked for me & ds1
£120 Shock

bloodyhairy · 11/11/2020 23:24

I'm in Edinburgh (where you do pay over the odds for most things, to be fair). £80 for my teeth alone. 60 quid for a family is a bargain!

bloodyhairy · 11/11/2020 23:26

And my NHS dentist has just gone private, due to Covid!

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 11/11/2020 23:37

Sounds cheap to me as well, I paid around £80 per person last time

AlrightTreacle · 12/11/2020 00:06

An appointment with my dental hygienist was £52, it's now £57.
