To think these p+p charges were fair?

I was selling some things on Facebook, advertised as free local collection.

Someone messaged me saying they wanted the item and please could I post. They paid postage costs (£4) and I posted the item this morning and sent them proof of postage.

It was 50p cheaper than they paid and they asked if I’ll be sending them back the 50p. Shock

I explained that I’d needed to buy the paper to wrap it specially as I had only listed it locally and had not planned to post. I also explained that I’d had to take a 3mile round trip to the post office to get it sent to them.

AIBU to not refund the 50p? What is an acceptable amount above the actual cost of postage? 50p? £1? (I had estimated the price online based on the size and weight of the object.)

YABU: you should refund the 50p
YANBU: you shouldn’t refund it!

I think what you pay is “postage and packaging.” The materials and time and effort you use to pack it all up are part of the P&P charge.

So no, you should not refund the 50p

GoogleWhacked · 09/11/2020 18:31

Postage and packaging cost £4, no quibbles there!

DontTouchTheMoustache · 09/11/2020 18:35

How bloody cheeky of them 😂

PoodleMoth · 09/11/2020 18:38

Total CF! It will have cost you more in materials, time, petrol and wear & tear of your car!

clary · 09/11/2020 18:44

Very cheeky. You had to pay for box or padded bag, tape to secure it, driving to post office, and also your time. I am pretty sure you haven't made a profit here.

An eBay buyer who got a £8-10 item brand new from me for 99p emailed me to complain about the 3.10 postage (standard second class parcel) as it had gone as a large letter, so for 1.88 I think. I was a bit Shock. There were costs of packing, transport etc as above.

WitchOfTheWest · 09/11/2020 18:46

Omg what a cf!! Remind them it's postage AND packaging! 😂

DynamoKev · 09/11/2020 18:51

and this is why I do collection only and stick to it. YANBU.

Wyntersdiary · 09/11/2020 19:10

I mean seeing as P&P means postage AND packaging 50p to you is fair

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 09/11/2020 19:17

I'd have charged them £4.50 and tried out that new 70p service where royal mail/parcel force collect it from you.
Three miles AND queuing up at the post office???

PastelPompoms · 09/11/2020 19:23

I haven’t heard of that collection service! I like the sound of it Grin

If be tempted to tell them that the packaging cost 99p so could they pay an extra 49p please. Cheeky feckers.

dontwantamirena · 09/11/2020 20:02

You shouldn't refund it. They accepted the price and paid it.

Unless you're printing the postage label yourself, it's impossible to avoid estimating the cost as either too high or too low. For every time the buyer is charged 50p over (ignoring packing, etc), there will have been a time they were 50p short.

I only offer free shipping on ebay for this reason, with the postage estimation factored into the item cost.

lanthanum · 09/11/2020 20:05

HMRC mileage rates are 45p a mile. 50p for a 3 mile round trip is a bargain.

olderthanyouthink · 09/11/2020 20:06

I've had a FB seller offer to refund me a small amount for this reason, I said keep it and buy a freddo
