Not to Buy 2 Year Old Christmas Presents

tt3t · 09/11/2020 15:58

My two year old is blind and severely disabled, so she doesn't walk, talk, play or grasp anything (still waiting for a diagnosis). She does respond to sounds and being touched.

My mum and sister buy her loads of clothes and stuffed toys, but I really can't think of anything to get her.

Does she have something like this snake toy, or maybe a space blanket that crackles when she lies on it?

dementedpixie · 09/11/2020 16:09

Sensory toys?

Mylittlepony374 · 09/11/2020 16:10

Buy her something to play music from? Sensory toys?

tt3t · 09/11/2020 16:16

@bloodywhitecat yes, she has a lot of sensory toys and a crinkly weighted blanket, but with the toys she can't grasp them.

Ahy not buy her something that plays music or reads stories. Maybe even something like an Alexa that you can use to play songs or sounds?

tt3t · 09/11/2020 16:19

@Mylittlepony374 she listens to music and sounds from my tablet, but I'll look into finding more sound toys.

That sounds really difficult OP, as you won’t be getting the expected smiles that you’ve been conditioned to expect with magical Christmases.
If there are private sensory places near you could you buy her that. Or there are screen free audio type book machines if she would like to listen to stories? Or a personalised storybook you can read to her?
Clothes are still good as it gives you some joy seeing her in them. Or things like a special lamp for her room etc. If a sticking is something you we’re still going to do then still do it and open it for her.

SunShinesStill · 09/11/2020 16:21

There’s something that keeps popping up on my Facebook feed I’ll try and find. It’s aimed as a screen free way for kids to play audio books with placing little figures on a box. Or if not the suggestion of an Alexa and audiobook subscription is a good one

You mean a tonie box. 😁
GrumpyHoonMain · 09/11/2020 16:24

DS loves the animal sounds book from Vtech. She might like something like that? Or maybe try rhinouk - they specialise in sensory toys for kids with additional needs and disabilities.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 09/11/2020 16:25

What about some aromatherapy stuff that she can smell!

tt3t · 09/11/2020 16:26

@SunShinesStill a personalised book is a great idea, thanks 😀

Have a look at the Tonie box. You can buy a variety of 'tonies' (characters) which play stories/songs and you can have it play your own stuff too.

tt3t · 09/11/2020 16:28

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 that's a good idea, I hadn't thought of that, thanks 🙂

Just had a look at the Tonie Box, nice variety of stories too. I think I'll order it for her.

Music?

Roseability18 · 09/11/2020 16:54

Along the same line as the Tonie box there is the Yoto player as well - looks like the books are quite a bit cheaper so worth considering if you are likely to purchase a few.

Also might she like the sensory aspect of kinetic sand or play-doh?

Holothane · 09/11/2020 17:03

Does she have any sight? if she does what about lights for her room that gently change colour, sensory toys as others have suggested.

SunShinesStill · 09/11/2020 17:25

Glad someone is awake, yes it’s the Tonie box that pops up!
I’ve used Pen Wizard for books before, but there are other more expensive ones you can get.

switswooo · 09/11/2020 17:42

She's very young so if you wanted to give it a miss this year I think it's fine. Some fab ideas though!

BashfulClam · 09/11/2020 17:42

What about a ball pit that she can lie and roll in as it feels really funny?

Di11y · 09/11/2020 17:51

Do you have a light projector? And lava lamps or bubble lamps?

Feministicon · 09/11/2020 17:59

Some great ideas, I hope you find something she enjoys.
