AIBU to want to know why my lower back hurts every morning?

Does anyone else have this? I am in my forties, fairly fit, normal BMI. Every single morning my lower back hurts. Just for 5 minutes or so it feels like I can’t straighten up properly. Is this just how life is now?
Maybe I need to do some yoga or something?
I also can’t sleep on my side without a pillow between me knees... is that normal?

@IncognitoBurrito did you have your gluten intolerance diagnosed? I’ve just cut out gluten because I have a range of spurious symptoms with no obvious cause, and a history of gluten intolerance in my family. A blood test a few years ago was negative though so who knows?

StealthPolarBear · 08/11/2020 21:36

I had this recently although it does seem to have improved. I assumed it was age and being overweight as my weight goes to my stomach. I've started to look into pilates and obviously trying to lose weight, not relevant to you.
As others have said it vanishes as soon as I've walked downstairs and turned on the kettle!

Sadsammy · 08/11/2020 21:38

I also have this plus find it too stiff to move to the side. It improves the more I'm up. I thought it was basic arthritis?

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 08/11/2020 21:39

Are you working from home in a dining chair, or curved over at a (low) laptop on a desk? That causes my bad backs at the moment.

vanillandhoney · 08/11/2020 21:39

I have this - I'm early thirties but have had it for about a decade.

I have sacroiliitis which is the inflammation of the sacroiliitic joint (where your hops meet your spine). The only thing that helps is painkillers. Helpfully, it can be triggered by too much exercise and also not enough exercise Hmm

Iggypoppie · 08/11/2020 21:40

Mattress topped worked for me

lotusbell · 08/11/2020 21:46

Mine is usually because I've slept on my front!

Propercrimboselecta · 08/11/2020 21:50

I get this and I'm in my late 20s so I really don't think it's purely menopausal.

DwangelaForever · 08/11/2020 21:52

I have lower back pains for about 17 days of the month. When it first started I thought it was to do with my c sections. But now I'm convinced its to do with ovulation and c section adhesions. Horrendous

madmarchmare · 08/11/2020 21:53

I had this then I got a new mattress and did Pilates and weight training and now it's fine. I don't know what was most effective out of those three things cos I sort of did them all at around the same time.

DressingGownofDoom · 08/11/2020 21:55

I get this sometimes and when I have it I have also woken myself doing a tiny bit of wee a couple of times. I have wondered if peri menopause could be starting early because I randomly get cycles that are exactly a week longer than my usual cycle. Should probably ring the doctor if it happens again I suppose. Had a nice new mattress last year so I don't think it's that.

Cymbidium69 · 08/11/2020 21:57

You might need to work on your core and glute muscles. I had the same problem until I started doing Pilates regularly. Cat stretches and pelvic tilts are a good way to start.

Emmelina · 08/11/2020 21:57

I’ve just turned 40, and get sciatica. Have done since pregnant with my youngest, and it took ages to get it taken seriously. First the GP wrote it off as PGP, then weakness due to hormones from breastfeeding, etc etc. Often it’s just stiffness in the morning, but if I can’t get it to move on with stretches and yoga I get the nervy shocks down my thighs and bum. In the evenings it’s needing to have a pillow between my knees to keep my back aligned.

Whatsissname · 08/11/2020 21:58

I get this too - but I have psoriatic arthritis, and before I started medication l couldn't walk downstairs first thing in a morning as I was so stiff and in that much pain. Much better now thankfully, though I still feel about 80 when I wake up some days Grin

SkaterGrrrrl · 08/11/2020 22:13

44 and get this in the morning too - worse after a lie in... Fine once I'm up and moving about.

AdoraBell · 08/11/2020 22:20

I’m the same, muscle spasms have twisted my spine and pelvis. The only thing that helps me is Pilates. That has strengthen my core muscles. The core muscles support the lower back muscles as well as the spine.

If you can get to a Pilate teacher, or YouTube, try the basic exercises, that could help.

AdoraBell · 08/11/2020 22:23

Also, walking helps me. I need to walk every day, even if just to the farm shop close to my house.

tootiredtospeak · 08/11/2020 22:40

Yep 43 and most mornings worst the longer I live in I start to freeze up. God help me when I am 63.

AlwaysColdHands · 08/11/2020 22:50

It might be helpful to do some little movements and stretches whilst still in bed eg draw your knees up to your chest for a few minutes, a gentle spinal twist. Go slowly and mobilise gradually rather than just getting up out of bed

bellalou1234 · 08/11/2020 22:50

F

WhatKatyDidNxt · 08/11/2020 22:51

Bed too soft?
Working from home and scrunched over the dining room table?

Holox · 08/11/2020 23:03

I get the same. Been told it's from my leg muscles/glutes being tight. Basically more stretching needed. Try sports massage and stretches based on yoga?

stopgap · 08/11/2020 23:05

Weak core.

WinWinnieTheWay · 08/11/2020 23:12

Do you sleep on your front? I get this and I have a very curved spine.
I have to curl myself into a ball for a couple of minutes.

romany4 · 08/11/2020 23:34

It's peri menopause.

Take magnesium. It's really helped me
