To wonder if this is usual - DS

DS is 6, 7 in Feb.

He really can’t tell whether television programmes and films are cartoons or made with actors and real sets etc. I’ve tried to explain. He will ask me “is this moving pictures or real people” (as a result of how I’ve tried to explain it) even for things where I’d have thought it was really obvious. He’s just asked me if strictly is really people or cartoons! He’s asked me about Kung Fu Panda and similar cartoons...

AIBU in thinking this might be a bit unusual?

I’m not sure. Dd and ds both found it difficult to differentiate -ds is diagnosed autistic. They both know now but still get over involved in films!

Both of mine found that difficult. My 11 year old has got it now but I seem to remember it took quite a while. My 5 year old asks every time.

Thanks! I’d never heard it mentioned so glad to hear it’s not just Ds!

My 6 year old often says "You can't tell they're not real people" when Scooby Doos on. She's under eye clinic for something else so I asked her consultant and she said it's pretty normal for children to not be able to tell the difference between real and cartoon and also between fact and fiction. So I think it's normal.

My younger brother was the same at that age. He used to get really worried about the actors in super hero cartoons especially - I remember someone falling off the roof in one and he asked me if they made it by dressing a dummy up as a person.

He's now in his thirties and a pretty successful banker.

I wouldn't worry too much at his age- children blur the boundaries between imagination and reality all the time. I think if he was 9 or 10 I'd be more concerned.
When I watch some animations, it's very easy to not notice they're rendered not filmed sometimes- animation has become so good.
