To think that, unless you know the kitchen they were made in is very clean, homemade edible gifts go straight in the bin

Especially this year

Given we’re sanitising things we touch and are ultra conscious about the spread of germs etc - AIBU to think that if you get edible gifts from someone’s who’s kitchen you either don’t know or don’t think is very clean - you’d just bin it?

I’m not saying you can catch Covid from the food but it’s the principle of not knowing how hygenic stuff is

I’m not a fan of homemade gifts at the best of times - I think a sort of rule should be that unless your homemade items are good enough to sell for actual money, then please don’t do it

No one is going to admit they binned it but I do hope those who would make homemade edible gifts, especially for teachers, this year think twice

Back in late 90's I agreed to feed bosses pet's while they were away, she always insisted on immaculate clean ironed uniform, if there was a crease she would tell you. One of the dogs peed on the grey tiled floor. I mopped it, and where I mopped was white tiles. Totally put me off her hygiene standards and never are annoying cooked by her again.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 08/11/2020 19:30

outofthemoon, can I either have those or have a knitting lesson?

I bake quite a lot and often take cake etc into work. I can't think of any consistent refusers - most of my colleagues are only too pleased to see the Tupperware come out!

GabsAlot · 08/11/2020 19:30

do you eat out op-if not fine but i dont see the difference really unless theyre intentionaly poisoning me i love homemade food

all gifts welcome

mswales · 08/11/2020 19:31

There has not been a single confirmed case of Covid being transmitted via an infected surface in Europe (www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/covid-19/latest-evidence/transmission) and the early studies which showed the virus surviving on surfaces have been widely discredited as they did not replicate real life conditions. It's really sad and frustrating we are wasting so much time and money manically disinfecting things when that money and time could actually save lives if it was spent on mask education. We clean surfaces to feel some control and some sense of security but it is pretty pointless where covid is concerned. www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/covid-19/latest-evidence/transmission

Nearlysantatime · 08/11/2020 19:31

I totally agree with you. Anything homemade where it’s not a friend you know well and know to be clean is going straight in the bin.

DBML · 08/11/2020 19:32

@OverTheRainbow88

Wow that sounds traumatic. I think something always triggers these things. I’ve not bothered with CBT because I don’t really mind and as I said, everyone I know understands what I’m like anyway.

@Gncq
I promise I don’t pee on the seat and if I did, despite my OCD I would clean up. I always have a packet of antibacterial wipes in my bag anyway, to go over taps or handles or my desk/ keyboard etc so it wouldn’t be an issue.

flaviaritt · 08/11/2020 19:32

mswales

Yes.

@GeorgeMichaelsEspadrille

Has anybody on here ever actually been I'll from someone's homemade brownie/cookie/jam/fudge?

Between us, my family must have eaten 100s of such goodies, but can't think of any harm caused.

Yes. Became very ill and was hospitalized for a week by eating a gift from my CO'S wife. I get a lot of homemade gifts from clients. I tell them Thank You and as the closest gas station it goes into the trash
Sonmi451 · 08/11/2020 19:33

I'm slightly peeved about all these edible gifts I'm not receiving, tbh. I'd love it if someone baked me a cake or made fudge for me.

I do have a friend who is slightly more squeamish about eating foods of unknown origin though. If at a charity coffee morning / school bake sale where she knows any of the helpers, she'll ask for a recommendation of which jam, cake etc to buy, ie, least likely to contain hairs or have been sneezed on. That's nothing to do with coronavirus though.

DBML · 08/11/2020 19:33

@TrustTheGeneGenie

I think I’ve been like it so long, it’s normal for me. But you’re probably right xx

TheJourneyWoman · 08/11/2020 19:34

YANBU! That said I make big beautiful birthday cakes for family members - not professional standards but they look nice, and they're always polished off till the last crumb.

flaviaritt · 08/11/2020 19:34

she'll ask for a recommendation of which jam, cake etc to buy, ie, least likely to contain hairs or have been sneezed on.

What do people get so upset about if they find a hair on their pizza? Just take it off!

NullcovoidNovember · 08/11/2020 19:34

At this present time I think it's ridiculous to make homemade gifts for anyone other than family.

Also my kitchen is awful, scuffed, scrapes etc however I'm very hot on hands, nails, breath hair back.. I know people with spotless kitchens but are happy to shove and double dip fingers with the longest nails attached into things to taste 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤧...

rottiemum88 · 08/11/2020 19:35

I know what you mean OP, I'm funny about edible gifts that have been made in anything other than a commercial setting. Fortunately we're not usually inundated with them, but the occasional ones we get are happily eaten by DH and DS, so problem solved.

I also agree it would be bad manners to say you don't want gifts or to give a gift back because you weren't going to eat it. For some the joy is all in the giving, it doesn't actually matter if you eat it or not.

blue25 · 08/11/2020 19:35

Agreed. I’m not sure people who make homemade food gifts realise this though!

Crankley · 08/11/2020 19:35

I'm with you OP, someone save us from homemade gifts, especially edible ones that have been made with the 'help' of the children and their snotty fingers.

FrancesHaHa · 08/11/2020 19:35

Of course I'd accept and eat gifted food from a friend, just like I'd go round their house for dinner (and wouldn't be inspecting their kitchen) and would share pot luck meals at work. Everyone I know does this. Don't get why this year would be any different tbh, I doubt you're going to catch COVID from someone's homemade biscuits

PartyAPartyB · 08/11/2020 19:36

Er, no, this has never occurred to me, sorry. I also eat at restaurants and from takeaways without checking out the kitchens and but food from markets and supermarkets without checking out the industrial factory standards so maybe I'm a daredevil!

Honestly, I think you're missing out.

midsomermurderess · 08/11/2020 19:36

I'd receive such gifts happily. All this battiness is knackering.

PartyAPartyB · 08/11/2020 19:37

Also, you know when they say 'made with love' they're not talking about... that...?Wink

Lowkeevslucille · 08/11/2020 19:38

Sounds like so much hard work to request a visit of the kitchen of every cafe, B&B, hotel, restaurant, airline, school, sandwich shop, friend or colleague that ever invited you or sold you food 😂

Either you are very naive, very hypocritical or consistent but very paranoid.

Russellbrandshair · 08/11/2020 19:38

I completely disagree. I think the paranoia and anxiety you are exhibiting regarding this is FAR unhealthier than eating someone’s home baked cookies. Anxiety has been proven to lower your immune system so this kind of overreaction will have a detrimental effect on your physical health.

SkedaddIe · 08/11/2020 19:38

YANBU.

BeyondMyWits · 08/11/2020 19:38

In my workplace we often have customers bring in homemade cake or biscuits. Most staff eat them. I don't. Because yes I am a bit paranoid and yes I do have a "thing" about eating stuff that others may touch. I don't know about the customers hygiene, but I do know some of my colleagues put their hand in the biscuit tin or slice up some cake without washing their hands first. But that is my problem. I would always accept a gift graciously and if homemade put it out to share at work... Blush not put it in the bin.

ivykaty44 · 08/11/2020 19:39

Has anybody on here ever actually been I'll from someone's homemade brownie/cookie/jam/fudge

Yes I have, I was violently sick 🤢 it was a cupcake topped with buttercream icing

It’s not stopped me eating foods prepared in other people’s kitchens though, it’s happened once in several decades
