To have taken my bin back from CF neighbours?

When I moved into my new house three weeks back I put my wheely bin out for collection. When I went to being it in, it had gone! Our council charges £50 for a new one which I can't afford so I have a few bin bags outside my door.

I can see the whole terraces back yards from a bedroom window, and when I looked to see if my bin (which had painted house numbers on done by the previous occupant) I saw it in my next door neighbours yard. I don't know them well, but she seems nice but he never smiles at me if we're outside at the same time, almost frowns, so to avoid confrontation over the bin, I have left it until it goes out this time. Well, it was there, full of dog poo, clearly has my number painted on, so I've claimed it back. Man neighbour scares me a bit but the bin is mine! I've put clear sticker numbers on now. I hate cheeky people who make life difficult.

I've done exactly that before - it's not theirs, take it back and make sure you get it in swiftly after its been emptied on bin day. Give it no more thought. With the number painted on it and presumably not looking fresh and new they're hardly going to accuse you of taking theirs.

FuzzyPuffling · 06/11/2020 08:37

Take it back. ( I am planning to do exactly the same to my neighbours next week... they've pinched our much better recycling bags!)

AlwaysCheddar · 06/11/2020 08:41

Take it back! Cf!

Magicra84 · 06/11/2020 08:42

People are so entitled and weird are they? If they don't have one, they both have decent jobs so would be able to afford a new one. Instead they steal mine!

Did you artfully trail the contents along their path as you carried your bin home ...................... Wink

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/11/2020 08:49

Get a bin lock.

Nymeriastark1 · 06/11/2020 08:51

I love the bin thief threads 😂 please do let us know if they say anything to you. Grin

Do your council provide a bin for free when you first move in? Ours do if you request it within the first 3 months of living there but I think our council must be extra generous with this.

I'd definitely take it back, our last street was a nightmare with people taking other people's bins. I remember seeing our clearly marked nearly new wheelie bin in our neighbours backyard from our upstairs window but being too scared to go knock and ask for it back as they were the sweary types who smoked weed and made a racket every night. I stole it back as soon as I saw the binmen leave.

In our new street I couldn't get rid of the extra bin I accidentally acquired and after leaving it out for a month decided just to put it in out garage. Now we have 3 rubbish bins!

lemmywinks84 · 06/11/2020 20:57

Have they noticed?

Freddiefox · 06/11/2020 21:00

Next time they take your bin, go and knock for it. Don’t show them any weakness

throwaway10000 · 06/11/2020 21:02

Definitely order a bin lock immediately. Better to completely nip this in the bud now.

user1471538283 · 06/11/2020 21:07

This happened to me once and it had never happened before! I'm sure the horrid male neighbiur did it either to wind me up or to get attention. I took it back the next time it was out and I didn't say anything which I hope wound him up. He also used to try and catch my eye. Creepy

Hayes178 · 06/11/2020 21:09

Never understood why people steal bins Hmm

Weenurse · 06/11/2020 21:10

Good for you

ekidmxcl · 06/11/2020 21:14

People are really mean. I’d paint your number on all sides and the lid. And get a bin lock if you can.

marveloustimeruiningeverything · 06/11/2020 21:14

Cheeky fuckers. You're never going to be friends with that kind of entitlement, so next time knock on their door and tell them to hand it over.

Spinningdot · 06/11/2020 21:16

I've done this. My neighbour took my bin. I patiently waited a fortnight for the bin to go back out. I tipped out the contents - their rubbish - and put my own bags in, and brought it back in straight away. if there was anything identifying in their rubbish & the council went through the bags, they would have been sent a fine. I really hope the smelly bin thieves got one.

HokeyWokey · 06/11/2020 21:17

Someone swapped our big family bin for a smaller bin and I'm still fumming 3 years later.

AdoraBell · 06/11/2020 21:19

Definitely paint your number on every surface as suggested. And if it disappears again knock and ask if they’ve mistakenly taken it again ?

Spinningdot · 06/11/2020 21:19

& if I knew who it was I would have knocked on the door and said 'I'm here for my bin.'

Ironmanrocks · 06/11/2020 21:27

My (lovely) neighbour took my freshly washed and disinfected food bin a while back and left me her stinking, slimy, filthy, rotten one. The stench made me cough and gag. 🤮(she eats meat and clearly left meaty stuff in there, not bagged - I am a veggie and use liners) I was very upset but just claimed it back the next week and COVERED my clean bins in stickers so there would be no mistakes in the future!!

WellWeAreFuckedNow · 06/11/2020 21:46

I used to live in a terraced house. The only thing I hated was the musical bins. Id always end up with no bin at all and the council wanted me to pay for me new ones every week!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/11/2020 22:38

Someone once walked up my drive and put their (bagged) dog pooh bag in my bin. (I know it's a bin but it's my bin and why walk into my garden to do so)

I don't have dogs , my NDN on both sides do ( multiple dogs) so they wouldn't have noticed

It stunk and I am still fumming and judgey Wink

Anordinarymum · 06/11/2020 22:43

I had an ex-neighbour who played tricks with the bins. He did a lot of other stuff which was very antisocial and unfortunately for me he did all this when my son died so I was going slightly mental and getting everything out of context.

The police retrieved my bin for me. A lovely WPC came to the house and talked to me for ages, and told me she would deal with him.
He watched her get my bin back from is front window and it never happened again.

Oldraver · 06/11/2020 22:54

Make sure you put your number on the bottom as well.
