I just want to start this by saying I absolutely hate fireworks, I am extremely scared of them and am currently writing this with headphones in with very loud music to try to mask the sound. I would 100% support banning fireworks and do feel so sorry for all the animals that are terrified of them.

There are lots of posts from animal owners asking for people to be considerate and not set off fireworks for their animals. However I live in a neighbourhood that is very popular with animals and constantly hear barking all day long, frequently very early in the morning (about 6/7 o’clock) and I’ve lost count of how much dog crap I’ve had to clean up from my front garden from owners not picking up after their animals and constantly having to look where I’m going when out walking in case I step in any.

Obviously I wouldn’t set off fireworks but can I can see why non animal owners would not be considerate for one day of the year when we have to deal with this all year round.

AIBU to think that if you want other people to be considerate towards your animals that you should also be considerate to non animal owners.

That is ridiculous, the real world doesn't usually involve explosives HmmThe reason why a lot of animals dislike them is because they are so out of the ordinary. It is not just dogs. It is cats that can be very negatively affected too, not to mention smaller animals and livestock. Wildlife suffers too, especially hedgehogs if thoughtless people don't think to check the bonfires.

What about people with PTSD who are badly affected by fireworks? Should we put them down too?

Good grief.[/quote]
You literally cannot stop comparing your dogs to people can you Grin

I don't really understand your point.

Nobody should be letting their dog bark excessively.... but that doesn't really have anything to do with whether they suffer as a result of garden fireworks, does it?

Surely people are more bothered about whether their actions cause animals stress than whether this stress annoys their owners?

For what it's worth, my dog is luckier than many, he doesn't know doesn't react too badly to fireworks (normally) and we have coping mechanisms in place to deal with the normal amount of bonfire night noise.... But he is suffering this year. And that's because the noise is incessant and much louder as it's coming from our direct neighbours.

I'm not sure what the answer is. This year is a shit show and I can definitely see why people are looking to create some normality with their own displays. But many people and animals are suffering so Confused

Whatisthisfuckery · 05/11/2020 22:44

I see where you’re going OP but it’s not a dog’s fault its owner doesn’t pick up its shit, and it’s not an animal’s fault their owner hasn’t trained them not to make a noise early in the morning.

Why would you punish an animal for having a shit owner?

Fieldofyellowflowers · 05/11/2020 22:57

@refriedbeanstalk

No. I just thought that your comment about not being able to cope with fireworks being he same thing as not being able to cope with the real world was pretty daft. How are explosives part of real, normal, everyday life? You haven't actually answered that.

You were pretty much comparing dogs to people by expecting them to cope with loud bangs the same way we can.

No way should animals be put down for not liking strange, uncommon, loud explosions. That is not the real world and it is not an everyday occurrence.

Everyone seems to be pointing the finger at dogs when it comes to not liking fireworks. But it is not just dogs. It is cats, livestock, wildlife, and yes, even humans who don't like/get scared of fireworks.

YANBU When the people who live in my village start picking their dog shit up, I’ll stop buying fireworks. Can’t see that happening any time soon, however.

OldCow1 · 05/11/2020 23:18

Shitty owners aren't the poor animal's fault

whoareyouIwonder · 05/11/2020 23:24

YANBU

NetflixWatcher · 06/11/2020 00:02

Yes op! YANBU. My neighbours dog bit me and drew blood as its jaw just locked and it wouldn't let go of my arm, got no apology but she put a message on the local community group urging people not to have fireworks for this 1 night a year as Tyson's scared of them. Im scared of Tyson he's bit multiple people now (so she told me) and she still doesn't muzzle him, she can jog on. Fireworks dont bother my dogs though I'd prob feel different if one of mine was terrified. Saying that, my sons never liked them either but I've never given that as a reason to the neighbours for not doing it.

I like animals and we have a few pets, it seems to be only dog owners who slip over into believing their pets are people, whom actual people should plan their lives around. Absolutely bonkers. If one of my pets couldn't cope with the world, to the extent that I was telling strangers how to behave around it, I would have it put down.
What the actual fuck at that last bit!?
safariboot · 06/11/2020 01:48

YABU for lumping all animal owners in together.

The kind of person who lets their dog bark alone in the garden all day is probably the same sort of person who would let off the loudest bangers they can find at 1am.

I’m sick of cats shitting and digging up my garden so no I couldn’t give a damn about a few fireworks

I'm living in hope that any animals you have have been taxidermied and aren't living beings with that attitude. The world does not need to involve explosives.

Literally the entire nation runs on explosions Grin

So why have prisons?
BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 06/11/2020 03:20

Your OP makes no sense. You don’t know that the owners asking for no fireworks are the ones letting their dogs in the garden to bark and not picking up their dogs poo.

I call our dogs in if they bark. I always pick up their poo. I also think fireworks should be banned. Your argument is completely flawed.

Also, just because some owners are irresponsible doesn’t mean you should then punish the dogs.
