Food bank/tampons?

Itstooloudinhere · 05/11/2020 13:35

Does anyone know if food banks would accept open/loose tampons? I have two packs of regular applicator tampons with the tops torn off the boxes. Would love to donate them but am worried they wouldn't be accepted as they're open?

To ask my local one is to do it via the Facebook page which I'm not wild about doing!

Ours dont take anything that is open but if there is a fb page can you pm it?

Londonmummy66 · 05/11/2020 13:37

I would ask as ours won't take tampons at all

My local food bank is not currently accepting goods from the public. You can either donate cash or online via bankuet.

(Harvest Festival donations from school/organisations were by specific arrangement only)

So I suspect it may well be a no for now at least.

SpeccyLime · 05/11/2020 13:43

My local food bank doesn’t accept anything open.

Could you leave them in your office bathroom for someone in an emergency or something like that? I know that wouldn’t be appropriate everywhere but you might be able to think of somewhere they could be used!

Hayeahnobut · 05/11/2020 13:53

Food banks do not accept opened/ part used products for hygiene reasons, but also because it's disrespectful to give out products in that state. Period poverty charities will not accept them either.

(I don't doubt you are asking because you want to help, but when donating it's worth asking if you'd be happy to receive/ buy an open packet yourself.)

Have you tried the Olio app? You can get rid of random stuff to people who'll actually use it. I know it's not quite as meaningful as giving them to the food bank but at least they'll not go to waste. Worth a try.

pizzamummy · 05/11/2020 13:56

Damn you COVID. I was going to suggest putting it in a public toilet.

pizzamummy · 05/11/2020 13:57

Or maybe give it to a homeless shelter?

TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 05/11/2020 13:57

I don’t think they’d consider it hygienic

fluffiphlox · 05/11/2020 14:03

I don’t think it’s very nice to give an open packet of anything.
I was interested to see that a PP said that their local food bank wouldn’t take them at all. What’s the rationale behind that I wonder? We’re always being told about hygiene poverty.

MsMiaWallace · 05/11/2020 14:10

Second the homeless shelter.
Or Salvation Army ?
Or do you have a Framework near you?
Also lots of councils collect toiletries to put packages together for victims of DV who may be fleeing.

tigerbear · 05/11/2020 14:23

As a previous poster asked, why don’t food banks take them at all??

Carrotcakey · 05/11/2020 14:26

They won’t take open sanitary towels or tampons.

People always give away half open bags of nappies on my local page and they’re not even individually wrapped. There doesn’t seem to be any issue with putting those on your babies bum! Which if you think about it is probably yuckier than a prewrapped sanitary product!

Londonmummy66 · 05/11/2020 14:30

I understand that our local foodbank won't take tampons as some of their clients have MH issues which means they might forget they have put one in - so might get an infection or increased risk of TSS. Think its a bit of a shame on those women who prefer tampons to pads but that is their policy.

Redcrayons · 05/11/2020 14:34

A local high school operating a red box scheme?
Or when everything is open again, leave them in a public toilet? His could be a long way off though.
