To ask if you take/get your break(s) at work?

Just a query as I see a lot of mnetters state that they don't get a break? And a lot of people seem to think that the more you earn the less entitled you are to your break.!

So do you take your break? I take my morning coffee/breakfast break and a lunch break. I'm on over 50k. Same with dh he's on over 53k and he takes his lunch!

No! But I work in a small school with several staff members off due to being vulnerable or ill (not with Covid). I did eat today but I ate with the children so it wasn’t really a break. Every mouthful was punctuated with ‘That’s not your food, give it back to him. Sit down please. Of course you can go to the toilet. Yes, you can go to the toilet too but you just need to wait for X to get back. Yes, you can have another drink, let me get it for you. No, sit down please. Give him his food back please, it’s not yours. Sit down please, you are eating. Your zip is stuck? Ok, come here and I’ll sort it out. Sit down please. Don’t hug her, she doesn’t like it. Yes, she’s your friend but she doesn’t want you to hug her. I hope she didn’t stick her tongue out, that’s not kind - did you stick your tongue out at your friend? Well, I think you need to say sorry, that’s not how we behave. Sit down please.....”

Nope. Not in 20 years. I eat my lunch at my desk.

Tigger03 · 05/11/2020 19:28

For all those saying you eat whilst working, is that imposed from above or self imposed?

I would really struggle to genuinely eat and productively work at the same time, would much rather step away from my screen for 10 mins, eat without distraction, and then crack on.

pincertoe · 05/11/2020 19:37

I eat my lunch at my desk, sometimes I play on my phone while eating then get back to it sometimes I work while I eat. My job is often to busy to bother with a proper break, it would just mean I work later in the day.

MillieEpple · 05/11/2020 19:45

I get 30 mins unpaid which I take. I cant eat at my desk so its either take the break and eat or dont eat.
My DH goes for a short walk and eats his sarnies.

I used to get an hour unpaid and sometimes took it, sometimes didnt.

I'm a nurse in a GP surgery. Unpaid 1hr lunch break which I always take in full. There's small breaks/catch up time built into the clinics so I can usually grab a coffee and breakfast midmorning if needed and can make coffee whenever I get time.
One reason why I really love my job! So many nurse friends barely get breaks in their jobs, I feel almost guilty for mine...

imamearcat · 05/11/2020 20:05

Just manage my own time really, especially now working from home. I wouldn't tend to take a break to have lunch as such but often run during the day. Will often start early and / or finish late.

Awalkintime · 05/11/2020 20:59

I have an hours break but never get to take it as there is too much to do. With covid I now have to work half an hour unpaid. The other half an hour is always working.

Wrenna · 05/11/2020 21:04

When I first started working in an office one place had three paid breaks, one at 9 am for 20 minutes, one at noon for an hour and one at 2:30 for 15 minutes! It was bliss! I work part time now with an unpaid lunch. I ‘can’ take a break but honestly would rather leave earlier. If I work more than 5 hours I’ll take a break for 10 minutes or so unpaid, but only because I work on my feet the whole time and after 4 hours I’m ready to give my legs a break!

funnylittlefloozie · 05/11/2020 21:06

Im a civil servant now. My lunch break isn't paid, so i try to make sure i do something away from.my desk. However, we are very flexible on time, so sometimes lunch can be 1.5hours+, and sometimes its 20 minutes.

I think its very poor management if your team dont habitually get the option to take their breaks, very poor indeed.

Burnthurst187 · 05/11/2020 22:19

Yes, every single working day

What is meant to be a ten minute tea break at 9:00 until 9:30. Lunch at 12:00 as it's half an hour unpaid, that's usually forty five minutes and then another ten minute tea break at 2:00 until 2:30. Sometimes I'll have a break late morning too, depends how busy I am. Usually not very lol

Sevendaysaweek · 05/11/2020 22:20

No have loo breaks but don’t get an actual break.
