To allow my dog pooping on the green space in front of our house

Sunnydunnybunny · 04/11/2020 04:30

We recently got a 7 months old dog and try to get into the new routine now. And we have an issue with the garden which I am trying to sort out, but it's going to take another month, or even two in a worst-case scenario.

We walk 2 h a day in local parks, but as a newish nervous dog, he sometimes brings his "business" closer to home.

I was wondering if that's ok to use the green space in front of our house ( we have like 15 houses in a circle and green space in a centre) to let him poop at night and if he needs to go between our walks. Of course, I clean up everything.
But still. For some reason, it's not comfortable for me, and I don't know if I am right in my feelings. I find someone else's dog poo there, and clean it up 😠, maybe that's why. Sometimes older kids use the space to kick the ball when the weather is better, and one of them has a dog.
I still hope to sort out the garden sooner..
What do you think/feel?

As long as you are cleaning up after your dog then i don't see an issue.

CatteStreet · 04/11/2020 06:12

Children play on there? No. Absolutely not. Even if you clear it up, there are still traces. What is the issue with your garden that your dog can't go there?

AgentProvocateur · 04/11/2020 06:20

I think it’s pretty disgusting to let your dog shit in an area where children play, but judging from the parks round here, I’m in a minority.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 04/11/2020 06:22

I think that is pretty anti social on a shared green space like that.

ApplestheHare · 04/11/2020 06:23

I wouldn't. We let our dog poo in an area of the garden the children don't play in as no matter how you clean it, there are always traces of poo left in the grass.

GADDay · 04/11/2020 06:26

Dogs don't shit on demand. When they have to go, they go.

All the hand wringing about traces of animal poo - so funny. Foxes, birds and other animals (besides domestic pets) actually do share our earthly realm and they crap outdoors.

Lordy, little Johnny's shoes will survive a trace or two.

GADDay · 04/11/2020 06:28

I do keep a small bag of sand in my walking bag though which I sprinkle on any remnants after pooper scooping.

Beautiful3 · 04/11/2020 06:31

Yes I would, as long as you clean it up of course.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 04/11/2020 06:46

Yes it's fine. The children will survive.

Bookworming · 04/11/2020 06:52

Surely anywhere a dog poos when it's beyond its garden will be potentially accessed by humans?

It's fine to just clear up afterwards, no one will get hurt.

AlCalavicci · 04/11/2020 07:02

I think as long as your dogs poo is firm enough for you to pick it up properly then it's ok
If its soft / runny ( all dogs get the squits from time to time ) the no as you won't be able to clean it up properly.
All that said I wouldn't allow it in the warmer / dryer weather when people may want to sit on the grass.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 04/11/2020 07:04

To those if you saying a little bit of dog poo won't hurt children you should Google Ocular Toxocariasis. I am blind in my right eye due to this infection from, what the doctors have said, dog faeces.
Oh and before the "there's wildlife poo everywhere" people jump in, that doesn't mean a little more shit won't hurt. 🙄

vanillandhoney · 04/11/2020 07:07

Despite what MN would have you believe, most dogs don't shit on command and when they gotta go, they gotta go.

Just make sure you clean up afterwards!

Coffeecak3 · 04/11/2020 07:09

You shouldn't be walking a puppy for 2 hours a day. It's 5 minutes for every month of his age.
You can walk him 35 minutes twice a day.
Any longer will potentially harm his joints.

Thesunrising · 04/11/2020 07:10

Nope - not where children play. It’s a health risk.

And if one dog owner starts doing it, another will see and start doing the same.

Please train your dog to go somewhere where children are not. Your neighbours will thank you for it.

JenniferFromTheBlock · 04/11/2020 07:11

I live around a similar grassy circle, sounds similar to yours. It's lovely for kids to have somewhere to run around right outside our homes. It's sad to see people out there in the dark using it as a dog toilet, and they pick up what they can see in the dark but not all of it and to be honest it disgusting.

Lolalovesmarmite · 04/11/2020 07:12

Don’t you have a garden? Where have you been training it to wee during the day?

MarthasGinYard · 04/11/2020 07:13

Yabu

Should have got your garden 'issues' sorted prior to having dog.

If I lived around your 'green' I wouldn't appreciate you letting your dog shit there.

user1493494961 · 04/11/2020 07:16

No, absolutely not.

vanillandhoney · 04/11/2020 07:16

Oh, and two hours a day of walking is far, FAR too much for such a young pup. 35 minutes twice a day is plenty at that age. You risk doing serious damage to his joints if you overdo it.

This. Feels like we are living in a world of dog poo now. Never mind it’s where children play, you should be mindful that ADULTS may use green spaces too. Do you not feel complete without a dog or something?
Rotundandhappy · 04/11/2020 07:20

WON’T SOMEONE PLEASE, THINK OF THE CHILDREN! 😱

It’ll be fine, just pick it up. You can’t control when a dog goes anyway. By all means add sand if you feel better, but due to the time of year, the lockdown, and the weather, I’d crack on and just pick it up.

But I do echo another poster, you’re walking them for too long. Don’t wreck their joints, it’ll prematurely devastate their life.

Rotundandhappy · 04/11/2020 07:20

@popcornlover what does the last bit of your comment mean? 🙄

SimplyRadishing · 04/11/2020 07:23

Its already been said but you are ruining your dogs health and joints please please stop this.
Also please educate yourself on your dog and care for your breed. I say this only because walk time is totally basic info so there are probably other knowledge gaps.

Re the grass
Again... on mumsnet dog go exactly where and when you want. In reality my very well behaved dog still goes at inopportune moments.
I think context is all. While I'd generally say keep it to the edge and pick it up, your uncomfortableness is probably based on the fact it's not appropriate for some reason.

Why is your garden completely inaccessible? Cant you use a puppy pad on a patio / by the back door?

Absolutely. If he really can't use your garden, I also think you should try to lead him to the gutter /edge of road by the green the moment he looks like he wants to squat.
