AIBU to think this year is likely to be the worst bonfire night weekend for a long time?

The sale of fireworks to private individuals for personal use doesn't look like it will end anytime soon but over the years there has been a significant move away from back garden displays to organised displays.

I'm concerned that this year due to Covid there are going to be so many more back garden displays and bonfires. This has the potential to make it a terrible time for some.

Already my social media is filled with 'bonfire night ISN'T cancelled' type posts and, more worryingly one or two 'looking for advice on best position for our bonfire' I know Facebook feeds aren't an indication of national trend as such but is anyone else concerned that the emergency services might be overwhelmed this coming weekend with lots of novices attempting to put on a show?

I loved our family bonfire nights as a child but that was extended family and adults with some experience of what they were doing. As an adult we've always taken our children to an organised display as have all the families I know.

All this means the fire services will be more under pressure than usual doesn't it?
The Police will probably be called out more than usual and the hospitals which are already dealing with Covid may now have accidental burns etc to cope with.
I hope I'm wrong.

Vote YABU if you think I'm being dramatic and that this year will be no worse than others.

Vote YABU if you share my concerns.

I don’t understand why people like setting off fireworks. They terrify animals to death. My dog shakes in fear and I can hear his heart beating. I think of all the animals outside like horses and all the others out in the wild that must be even more scared.

I hadn't given it much thought to be honest but now I've read what you've put I agree with you.

I votesd YABU by mistake but I agree with you.

There's a (very nice) young family with a garden bordering my horses field. They've been a bit clueless in the past (throwing grass clippings and loads of apples iver the fence) and they seem to do everything- big VE day, big Halloween decs. I'm nervous they are going to have fireworks.

There will definitely be more back garden fireworks. That will almost certainly lead to more incidents for the emergency services.

But there will be significant spike in joy around the country.

Ohfrigginghellers · 04/11/2020 10:37

I wouldn't dare set off a firework. Just sparklers, hot chocolate and Marshmallows for us.

EveLe · 04/11/2020 10:40

We only ever buy sparklers. This year we haven’t been able to do that, as fireworks are non essential so haven’t been for sale during the Wales lockdown, so I’m expecting Bonfire Night to be quiet here.

Sevendaysaweek · 04/11/2020 10:42

I’ve never agreed the should be sold for private displays. I do think this year there will be a lot more though unfortunately.

Noitjustwontdo · 04/11/2020 10:44

A few councils have asked people not to light bonfires or use fireworks this year to protect the already stretched emergency services. Nobody in my area is listening, they started setting them off on Halloween and have been setting them off every night since. I heard some after 11pm last night ffs.

Noitjustwontdo · 04/11/2020 10:45

Also can smell bonfires from mid October onwards. As soon as autumn hits people round here start lighting them, no idea why but it stinks.

Scattyhattie · 04/11/2020 11:43

There's been fireworks being let off locally for weeks already, during the weekly NHS clap it was a thing for some too. They seem to favour those really loud fireworks unfortunately.
I'm grateful my current dogs aren't bothered as it gets really difficult trying to take dogs out to toilet/walks when they can go off at any time of day & managing their distress Sad

BowtieBling · 05/11/2020 22:09

The air is very smoky here this evening. Went for a walk earlier and had to shower when I got home to get the smell of smoke from my hair.
Thankfully no signs locally of any emergencies. Hopefully that continues and is a pattern found nationally.
I'll be happy if my pessimistic attitude was totally wrong
