Tonsillitis... again! :(

Posting for traffic.
I’ve got tonsillitis AGAIN!! 5th time this year and it’s making me miserable 😩
Does anyone have any home remedies? Or any must have meds or tips or anything!
I feel like I’ve got an angry porcupine in my throat and my body aches.
I’m taking antibiotics (reluctantly really, 3rd time this year) and paracetamol.
I have to have weekly COVID tests for work and they’re all negative.
I’ve tried difflam, tyrozettes, salt gargles, honey and lemon.
I feel all achy and grumpy.
Please help!

Having my tonsils out was honestly life changing for me.
It's miserable to live with tonsillitis

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/11/2020 20:58

It's cloth in cold water (properly sqeeze water out, it's just to ensure it's cold), wrap it around the neck, wrap cling film around and then scarf or something. It really helps calm the throat down and supposedly helps with blood circulation and healing.
Keep it on for 2 hours.

I forgot the wrap might not be known under that name here Blush

Mamathebest · 03/11/2020 21:00

Also in terms of pain management. A mixture of codeine and ibuprofen helped the best. Paracetamol doesn’t do much!

I used to get it a lot as a teenager. I found gargling with diluted TCP every 2 hours really helps, along with gargling aspirin every 4 hours. It's the anti inflammatory effect of the aspirin that really helps.

Honestly if it’s chronic then there’s only one option- removal! I had it on/off as a child. Went away for about 10 years. Then after a year of giving birth to my child. I was having chronic infections. I’m talking infections every 2-3 weeks. I was basically on antibiotics for a full year and tried every home remedy you can think of. After many hospital admissions and begging they finally removed it. Honestly I am not exaggerating but it changed my life. I couldn’t work and was barely functioning. It’s a horrible infection. If it keeps returning ask for a referral to ENT. My consultant told me that there is no other treatment option available for chronic tonsillitis. An infection won’t go with OTC methods..

I was lucky enough to get mine lasered as I have private insurance. What a difference. Had it done in the ENT's consulting room. A bit of local anaesthetic and the smell of burning (yuk) and it was all over. No down time. Wee bit of a sore throat for two days and no bother since. Perhaps I'm missing something but it seemed so easy compared to having them out at my age (old)!

MrMeeseekscando · 03/11/2020 23:04

Grin I had mine done the old fashioned way. Not gonna lie, it was very difficult for a couple of days. Still worth it though. Constant earaches, feeling under the weather, being unable to eat, the pain...
All gone

Tonsillitis is truly awful. I don't have any advice but maybe a ray of hope? I never had tonsillitis as a child then from the age of 19-30+ I got it a lot. Sometimes extremely badly and querying Quincy throat. Saw a surgeon who considered removal but I was too much of a wuss. However I'm 39 now and v rarely get it (touches all the wood) - I didn't do anything it just seemed to stop. I do get a really sore throat whenever I'm tired or run down though and actually with stress at the weekend I thought tonsillitis was on it's was I had that sore full throat feeling but it's went away. I'm probably rambling but hope it might help to know it's not necessarily always going to be like this.

My last dose was two lots of antibiotics along with steroids. I feel your pain

NRatched · 04/11/2020 13:32

Oh god, I feel for you. When I was younger, I got this without fail at least 6 times a year, usually monthly. GP refused to take them out, said it might go away when I got older. This happened from when I was about 8 or 9.
He was right mind, it stopped round about my 18th birthday, but I still find it harsh that they left me in so much pain for 10 years hoping it would all just go away, if it hadn't, I suspect the excuse would have changed.

The only thing that helped me, and still does for sore throats, is sucking on chocolate. When I suggest this people give me a Hmm look and ignore me usually, but it really helped me, especially with the tonsilitus..I think because it coated the area or something, but it always did help somewhat. Don't eat it, just suck on a piece every now and then. Please try it before discounting it, becase it was the only thing I ever found that consistently helped, and I know it sounds batshit..

Itmaybeus · 04/11/2020 13:42

Dc2 and I had tonsillectomy after both enduring repeated illness it was such a relief worth the surgery. Check with your gp for requirements and get on the waiting list if you meet them as it may be a long wait.
Nothing seemed to relieve enough. Definitely change your toothbrush each time. Difflam and gargling aspirin. Probiotic if you're taking antibiotics. Perhaps vitamin supplements. Rest, gentle exercise, reduce stress, generally look after yourself - harder said than done.

Topseyt · 04/11/2020 13:44

@BurningMam

I get it all the time and find that gargling warm salt water (whilst horrible) really helps and fixes it up quickly. I get it so often and begged my GP to take them out - he said that, in truth, if they do take them out then it won't stop the infection, I'd just get a chest infection instead and that's much more dangerous. Spoke to a couple of people who had theirs out and they confirmed they get a lot of chest infections. Guess we're stuck then.
That certainly hasn't been the case for me.

I used to get quinsy a lot, where the tonsils form abscesses which swell up and can block the airway. I had them taken out when I was 37 and it was the best decision I ever made. I am 54 now and have had no more throat problems since. None at all. I've only had one significant chest infection (bronchitis) since then too.

So I would press further for referral to an ENT specialist.
