AIBU to go to A&E??

I am extremely constipated to the point where I simply cannot go. I have been this way for maybe 3 years.. Numerous trips to the doctors and sent away with different meds, diet change (tried wheat free, gluten free, dairy free, all of the above free!), prune juice etc, movicol, laxido, different toilet positions, every single type of 'Dulco' form, senna tablets, sennocot etc. You name it, I've tried it! Some laxatives are effective and work within a few hours but as soon as the next day comes I am back to being constipated to the point I feel sick and have chest pains. A few months back my doctor finally referred me to a clinic, I moved house around the same time and apparently a letter was sent to my old address of my new appointment which was back in September so obviously I missed this, i phoned the hospital I was due to have the appointment who told me I will need to get back in touch with my doctor and ask them to refer me again. I phoned the doctors, explained the situation and arranged a telephone appointment.. Waited until late evening and still no phonecall, arranged another call, I answered just as they hung up (phoned back within seconds couldn't get through). Constant phone tennis and all I need is to be re reffered to the hospital! This issue is really affecting my life, I'm in pain all the time, miserable as I constantly feel full up and needing to go to the toilet, I can't lie on my stomach or back as the pressure is too uncomfortable, sex is out of the question as it has become painful. The tablets are now having less of an effect and I have to overdose on laxatives to get anything to come out and even then it is just watery and the relief only lasts a few hours (sorry way too much info) I am fed up quite frankly and I most likely will not get another appointment now for a good few months. WIBU to take myself to A&E? Would they be able to do anything? It's been a good few days now of passing nothing.. Please help!

I think the time to be polite has been and gone.

Phone the dr every day to ask for an update on ypur referral. Ask for an update on medication plan.

If in pain, go to a and e and ask for an x ray. Dont let them fob you off with the blockage being 'too high' ask them that given they aknowledge theres a blockage, what are they going to do to remedy it?

You can do all the above without being rude, but by being confident.

Dont ask vague questions, ask specific things you want an answer to, this stops them from being able to fob you off.

Good luck.

What Scottish said!
If I'm expecting a call from the GP I'd call by the evening and say I'm still waiting. I did that last week. Receptionist wasn't bothered.
If you want them to sort it you'll have to be more persistent and confident.

are you near enough o go to a different A&E.
as someone else said, do not tell them you have constipation.
just tell them the symptoms.
can you change GPs. may take a while. in the meantime you have to ring them every day. can you email them.
tell them you fear blockage, growth, etc. may not be in bowel.
ask can they rule those out. need scan to locate problem, plan.

I've noticed that when I do an enema, and I only so one maybe twice a year, that after I put it in the first lot of poo is new poo and then I wait 5 minutes or so and then another lot comes out and it's like older poo that's been stuck up there, it smells quite a bit too. I know advice says an enema won't help but I would try it, the relief is absolutely wonderful.

Below is the current treatment pathway for adult women with chronic constipation. It should provide insight into the treatment path your doctor should be following.

pathways.nice.org.uk/pathways/constipation#content=view-node%3Anodes-chronic-idiopathic-constipation

"Prucalopride is recommended as an option for the treatment of chronic constipation only in women for whom treatment with at least two laxatives from different classes, at the highest tolerated recommended doses for at least 6 months, has failed to provide adequate relief and invasive treatment for constipation is being considered.
If treatment with prucalopride is not effective after 4 weeks, the woman should be re-examined and the benefit of continuing treatment reconsidered.
Prucalopride should only be prescribed by a clinician with experience of treating chronic constipation, who has carefully reviewed the woman's previous courses of laxative treatments specified above.
NICE has written information for the public on prucalopride."
