If you also have a smartphone too?

I've been considering buying an iPad but I'm in two minds about it as I do also have an iPhone and I don't want it to be a pointless purchase. I was thinking of using it for myself but also have maybe for DS in the future (he's too young though atm).

What do you use yours for that you don't do on your phone? Be interested to hear people's opinions Smile

I would definitely wait for black friday. That's when I bought my Fire and got a great price.

I work on spreadsheets on my Fire using Google Docs, but I'm sure there are other platforms that would work as well.[/quote]
Thank you.

I use my phone as a phone, texts and WhatsApp. It's too small for reading much on (longsightedness comes to most of us!) so the iPad is for browsing, online shopping, newspapers, MN, YouTube etc. I also have an iPod for podcasts because it's small and light to carry around when I'm listening to something while exercising or doing chores, it fits in my pocket better than the phone. (I've got an Apple Watch, so that picks up phone calls and texts if I'm in Bluetooth range of the phone so I've no need to carry it around the house.).

I have a laptop on a dock and a pair of big monitors for work.

I have an iPad and if it broke I’d have to go straight out and replace it. I use it as a TV, for reading, writing, social media, work (I have a laptop for writing long documents, Excel, etc. but for quick notes and emails I use the ipad. I also have a (fake) Apple Pencil - they’re available widely online for about £30 - and I use that with an app called Notability for things like designing courses (I’m a lecturer), signing documents (I just download the document into Notability, sign it, and email it straight back to the school) and To do lists (there are some lovely apps for this). Both my kids have iPads. During lockdown they both used it for homework, and my son who is normally terrible at art, was able to use his to create some great digital art using an app called Procreate. Teams syncs seamlessly with it, so when I am teaching I can share my PowerPoint /activity screen and simultaneously respond to the chat messages from students using the iPad. I also have a detachable keyboard (also about £30) so I can use it more as a laptop while travelling if I need to do some work. I do research on it, such as searching library databases, record interviews, and I can even mark on it. I can also, if I need to, connect it to my laptop and convert it to a second monitor using an app called Duet. It’s a bit clunky but that’s probably because my laptop is ancient! Most of all, it’s so portable. I just chuck it in my handbag and I’m good to go!

megletthesecond · 02/11/2020 23:06

Doing you tube workouts in the garden. The tablet plays the video and I have the radio on my phone.

Waveysnail · 02/11/2020 23:09

DC have ipad each. Been complete blessing with home schooling as each can stay logged on school apps. Has netflix so they can watch cartoons so no fighting over tv. Loads educational apps. And most important easy to set restrictions and limits

justasking111 · 02/11/2020 23:10

By the bed at night to listen to netflix with ear buds in. Around the house during the day when I am cleaning listening to netflix/amazon prime, I tend to stick to binge series during the day and old favourites at night to send me to sleep. I have to use a lap top for typing documents and on here my fat fingers just too slow on a tablet or phone.

I love the convenience of a tablet for tv type viewing. Still like my old fashioned paperwhite for reading though.

SillyCow6 · 02/11/2020 23:13

Reading and netflix/youtube

Aswad · 02/11/2020 23:14

Have twoConfused
Ipad 12.9 so massive screen: watch movies/YouTube, digital planning/digital art, budgeting, some word processing, reading
Smaller tablet for portability. Take to work and back and use for anything work related: emails, zoom calls, word processing etc
Also have a laptop and I honestly use all three devices weekly

Aswad · 02/11/2020 23:18

@gchali iPads rarely go on sale. Do you have any students in the family? UNiDAYS offer some money off if you’re in higher education
Samsung s6 and s7 are also great and much cheaper than the iPad. Comes with stylus if that helps

gchali · 02/11/2020 23:22

@Aswad Ah really? I thought there might be a bit of money off. No I don't have students in my family Sad

I use my iPad to watch tv shows, iplayer /YouTube/4od etc. It’s much lighter than using a laptop and you can use it lying in bed. I can rest my back easier than using a laptop. I don’t use it for work. I use it more for casual browsing. Better than using an iPhone as it’s bigger.

CovidNightmare · 02/11/2020 23:31

I use mine in the house, it is linked to my iphone so any messages/calls I get on the iphone come through on ipad. Larger text and keys make it much easier and more comfortable to use.

Mumsnet, Shopping, Games, Youtube, Google, zoom/Google duo calls, recipes, social media (Facebook, twitter), news/newspapers, banking, school app, groceries, emails including attachments anything you can do on phone but bigger.

I have spreadsheets, onenote , originally created on pc I can access/edit on one drive through ipad

MountainDweller · 02/11/2020 23:33

I've had an iPad since they first came out and before I got my iPhone. I love it and use it for almost everything - email, iMessage, internet, Mumsnet, games, iPlayer, magazine apps, instagram, Facebook, kindle, health insurance claims, banking apps - all easier on a bigger screen! I'm getting longer sighted with age and most things are just on the edge of being too small to read on my phone. I only use my phone when I'm out really, and for facetime (easier to hold) and calls, WhatsApp and listening to audible books and music. My phone is a 1st gen SE and I guess if I didn't have the iPad I might be tempted to upgrade for a bigger screen.

Currys sometimes do black Friday money off, not much only £20-£30 (plus my work gets a discount at currys), that's where we usually get ours. John Lewis sometimes price matches (and has longer warranty), but be quick as they go quickly.

Franticbutterfly · 02/11/2020 23:36

Looking at all the magazines on Readly. I barely read them, just flick through mindlessly, it's my favourite activity.

Woui · 02/11/2020 23:51

I only ever use mine for sky/netflick/prime in the bedroom. I use it every day. I also spend a fair amount of time in hospital so I download films / TV for that too.

I have a huge phone so do everything else in there.

sergeilavrov · 02/11/2020 23:52

I specifically do not integrate my email or texts with my iPad, so I can use it to ‘switch off’ and not panic about notifications suggesting I have work to do. I have tv based apps for bed/watching in the bath, social media (don’t have on my phone). I also have some shopping apps so I can buy unnecessary clothes and kitchen stuff Grin

Gooseygoosey12345 · 02/11/2020 23:52

Crochet patterns (I'm actually not a granny...), studying, Netflix, reading, FaceTime. It's really handy

FlyingByTheSeatof · 03/11/2020 00:50

I loved my iPad then lent it to DD who broke hers and even though she has a new ipad now I haven't missed it at all as I use my MacBook Air all the time instead.

But saying that of late it keeps shutting down for no reason at all so I'll have to think about whether to replace it with an ipad or another MacBook.
My old ipad is still going but it's old now but at least it's there I suppose if this does decide to shut down forever.

AlwaysLatte · 03/11/2020 01:06

Mostly Netflix

BoomBoomsCousin · 03/11/2020 01:16

I have an iPhone an iPad and a MacBook. I use the tablet the most. I read books, browse the web and watch movies. I play a few games on it, write/edit documents and fill in spreadsheets.

I use my phone for photos, texting, directions and as the data source for my tablet when I'm out and about! I do occasionally use my phone for reading or browsing the web, etc. when it's inconvenient to have anything other than a one handed device. If I didn't need a phone and a data source I would be tempted to get rid of the phone.

I use my laptop for coding, photo editing and anything particularly heavy duty. I need it for coding, but if I didn't I probably wouldn't replace it when it finally dies on me, because the tablet is good enough.

Love my tablet. So much better than a phone and so much lighter than a laptop.

mycatlovesmenotyou · 03/11/2020 01:18

I use my iPad every night to read, play games, Facebook, Mumsnet, banking, shopping, reading the news, . I never watch stuff on it as I use it while I watch tv.

I wouldn’t use my phone all night like I do my iPad as it’s too small.
