Bit of a background. I'm 31 years old and based in wales.
I'm up to date on my smears , but was due to return in august. Recieved no letter as suspended cervical screening for covid in Wales. My last smear advised mild changes no HPV.

The last couple of months I've suffered with pelvic pain (dull ache almost constantly and some intermittent sharper pains) and a couple of instances of bleeding/pink discharge after sex. I've also had some back pain, tiredness and nausea but really hard to say if related or not.

I've waited 4 weeks for a phone call with my GP today, and she has now booked me in for a smear with a nurse in almost 4 weeks time.

To me, this just seems too long a wait and my understanding was I should have a pelvic exam with my GP rather than just a smear? I'm worried I'll wait two weeks for my smear result to need to book another appointment with the GP.

I explained on the phone I was worried about cervical cancer because she didn't seem that bothered - I highlighted my mum and Auntie both had it (caught early). She also interrupted me a couple of times whilst I was talking so I couldn't explain everything fully.

Am I being unreasonable in thinking this isn't good enough and asking to speak to another Dr? It's a small surgery and I don't want to ruffle feathers, but I feel like I wasn't taken seriously. I also don't want to be a burden on the NHS during covid, so please let me know if I'm being a total nightmare.

Also does anyone know if it's possible for HPV to change from negative to positive if you are with the same partner? And anyone ever had cervicl cancer without HPV?

Thanks in advance!

It doesn’t seem right to delay you when you’re worried and have a family history (albeit there’s probably lots more chance you’re fine). Can you call the surgery and speak to the lead GP Partner instead and complain?

I thought maybe I was being panicky and unreasonable so thanks for your reply.
I'll have to try and give a call tomorrow.

Hi OP,

No you are not being unreasonable, you are being sensible and have symptoms that could raise concern. (Not meaning to scare you at all). Make sure they don’t fob you off again.

HPV is generally sexually transmitted, so your unlikely to have picked it up unless you've changed partner. But its not impossible- which is why everyone regardless of sexual history is screened. but it does take along time HPV to turn into Cancer.
But if you have a previous abnormal result, a family history and symptoms, then you shouldn't be fobbed off.
Does your GP have a E-consult option? Can you do one of those and see if you get a better response? At the very least have opportunity to tell them everything without being interrupted.

Im so sorry you have experienced this.

Thanks everyone for you replies, I called today and spoke to another Dr about my concerns and now have an appointment for next week - still just for a smear but with a chat with go after. Finger crossed its nothing but thanks for your replies - I'm not the most assertive usually.

I’m pleased to read your update OP. I hope everything is okay and wish you luck.

Just to update on this. I finally had an appointment with the Dr but she wasn't available when I turned up, so I just had a smear done instead. First time ever that I bled on my smear and she described my cervix as friable. She advised she would not my file for the GP to review with next steps. I've just been told Im not being referred to the gyno, but it might take 3 months to be seen? When I questioned this she said I could choose to go private? I've never gone private be before and don't even know how much a consultation would cost. I feel like I should be seen much faster than this and I know I'm going to be so worried waiting...
