to think if my children go to the library with school they should not be taken there late, read half a story, allowed to choose books to take hom with them, but then as there is no time, having to put them all back??

DD's reception class went to the Library for the first time today. The local library. DD so excited her first 'school trip'. THe class left school late, so when they got to the library for the story reading session the story had to be stopped half way through. Then the teacher said they could all get a book out and join the lib., So they a;ll picked a book. Then the teacher realised the time while they were all queuing to check out their books, and so they had to all put them down and leave them in a pile on the library counter, get back into pairs, and walk back to school!

Very bad planning on the teachers part unless there was an emergency at school before they left. Not much you can do about it though and I expect she feels pretty bad about it as well. YANBU though

only found out as DD told me about it, then I asked the parent who had gone with them, and she told me the whole sorry story! Its another one in a long list of balls ups by the school! And it was a supply teacher.

dd3 hates walking (so would not have appreciated all the rushing about) and adores books and stories and would have been gutted by this! Would have traumatised her for years to come!

The school I've decided to send her to (she starts next September)does trips to the local library so I only hope they are somewhat more organised than that!

I feel for the library staff and the other people who had got there on time tbh. This happened to me once, I took minded child to the library for storytime, half way through a nursery class turns up, disrupting the whole session and then they proceeded to noisily remove coats etc then the kids talked all the way through the story whilst the "young" nursery workers stood around ! the didnt even do anything when 2 of them kept kicking the little boy in front (the little boy wasnt with the nursey group but they wanted to sit in the front so literally kicked him until he moved ! )

Parents will notice these things and it doesnt reflect well on the school.

Sounds like poor organisation on the part of the teacher tbh. Dd has had school trips to the local library but she's had a ticket since she was 6 weeks old!! Didn't stop her from choosing her allotted 2 books with the rest of the class (the books were retained in school though) - the teacher had a special card so she could have a mass loan. I helped on this trip but it did take most of the morning up - 2- 2.5 hours as we walked them as well.

MrsWeasley - I took my dd and my dn to a story time in the May half-term holiday at a local library. Half-way through the story, a crowd of children were ushered in, right to the front and the story was re-started for them. To add insult to injury, the library staff then handed all the opinion surveys to these children - ignoring everyone else who had got there on time. I was fuming as I'd rushed my dd and dn to get there on time so we weren't disruptive .

I know what you mean Bookwormmum its enough to drive you crazy isnt it? (I wonder if there is a thing as book rage or library rage??)

If we cant get there on time I wouldnt go, I wouldnt dream of barging in!

i would speak to the head, totally unacceptable!!

This reminds me of something that happened the other week. A small group of pre-schoolers arrived in the library with their carers. They were told to chose books while the woman sat down and started texting on her mobile phone. The second woman finally turned up and picked up about four books from the end of the shelf, didnt even look to see what they were, they were in there for all of about five minutes. The carers were disinterested and did not encourage any of the children to look at the books. I was sitting reading to DD and at least three of the children came and sat down to listen to the story. The carers were wearing the uniform of a local nursery - i made a mental note not to bother with that one when DD goes to nursery.
