AIBU to pick your brains about a present for my dad?

My lovely dad turns 60 soon. I want to get him something good, but he is so very hard to buy for. He also doesn’t really like ‘stuff’ and very rarely expresses a desire to own anything. I’ve had good success in the past with ‘experience’ presents but lockdown obviously makes that tricky.

Things he likes:

Golf
Beekeeping
Maps
Bread making
Cricket (watching, not so much playing)
Good wine

Things he does not love:

Anything novelty
Ornaments / nicknacks etc
Fiction books
Clutter

Budget is ideally about £60 but would go higher for the right present. Any genius ideas?!

Pumpkin carving kit

What about a subscription type gift. I've bought wine, chocolate and food making kits subscriptions in the past.

If your still wanting an experience many of them have extended use by dates.

A bunch of flours

Elmo230885 · 01/11/2020 13:54

I'm pretty sure baked in.co.uk do gift subscriptions and have bread making based boxes.

I have the same issue with my dad. Never know what to get him! I usually end up now getting something he can do with my kids as he dotes on them.

St&g marvellous maps.....they are novelty in a way but not tacky I don't think.
They can be bought framed I believe.

Does he have a favourite place and drink? If so, pubstops......they are maps that look like the underground.

Seakisses......they do lovely maps also.

World kitchen explorer.......they do subscription spice boxes.

Flower bombs......wildflower seeds in biodegradable containers that you can just chuck anywhere to encourage the bees.

What about a subscription to a magazine. Ive seen golf magazines. Not sure about bee keeping. DVD of cricket matches. Never seen one but presume they will exist.

Bamboo15 · 01/11/2020 14:02

Subscription to cricket magazine? Wisdon is consider fascinating I’m told!

NotTheMrMenAgain · 01/11/2020 14:03

Does he actually have his own hives? I'd imagine there would be a whole world of gifting opportunities for a beekeeper, surely? A quick google brings up lots of things....

For maps, maybe a custom one from here:

Is there somewhere that has special meaning for him?

What about something like this?

ScrapThatThen · 01/11/2020 14:12

A cricket autobiography?
Cheese by post.
RSPB are doing a 'coffee break birdfeeding' kit with a mug, coffee, and birdseed and a robin birdfeeder (probably not your dad's style but their shop is decent if he likes birds)

FannysSteadiedBuffs · 01/11/2020 14:13

Has he got an electric golf trolley thing?

You can get golf balls with photos on.

What about a baguette baking tray or a silicone bread thing www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007F6EN96?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 or a massive massive bag of flour?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 01/11/2020 14:16

Scroll through in the Christmas topic - there are several threads about Christmas presents for hard-to-buy-do men - you might find some ideas there too?

nitgel · 01/11/2020 14:19

Really good umbrella

billybagpuss · 01/11/2020 14:23

The bunch of flours mentioned above is a good thought, I bought bil a selection of interesting selection of flour from shipton mill.

Ordnance survey shop also do interesting map gifts, I have an OS map of scafell, and Snowdon as a technical quick dry towel which is lightweight and easy to slip in a golf bag. It’s excellent quality and not at all tacky and 100% accurate, yes we did use it walking scafell

Trip to a local vineyard with an IOU to buy a bottle of his favourite wine? If you're worried about it running out do an informal one where you print off the details yourself but don't actually book until it's a good time. Same with a day out to the cricket next year?

display print map of his local area and how it changed over time? my ex's parents lived in an old house and I printed out the relevant parts of the old OS maps at intervals from c.1880 so they could see how their town had changed - put them in nice frames and they loved it.

does he enjoy days out? Maybe something fun like footgolf or adventure golf post lockdown so he can show off his skills with the whole family?
