That Restrictions in England should start Monday night, not Thursday

I get that Parliament should vote for them. They sit on Monday, so why not then?

Four weeks from Monday night ends on 30 November, pay day for many.
Four weeks from Thursday ends 2 December, so people will shop more online then instead of at high street stores. The Christmas rush (the most is in the first week of December) is concentrated into 3 days not five, so less chance of social distancing.

Assuming that non-food stores re-open after four weeks.

There is no logic on any of the decisions made.

BashfulClam · 01/11/2020 11:32

I think they might be trying to avoid having people panicking and rushing out to top up bog roll.

Noitjustwontdo · 01/11/2020 11:34

If they announced it last night and said it would start less than 48 hours later there’d have been absolute uproar at the little notice, especially from businesses which will have to close. I’m not a fan of the government whatsoever but there’s always a reason for someone to whinge.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 01/11/2020 11:37

I have shit to do before we lock down , its bad enough my Sunday is now running around trying to get stuff sorted, I really need Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after school to fit everything in.

I'm not assuming it'll finish on 2nd December. They are deliberately leaving it open ended with messaging that if things haven't improved then it'll be extended.

Sorry for independent shops, but i would presume if you can't get something before Wednesday evening, you'll have to shop online.

Lazypuppy · 01/11/2020 11:41

I have stuff to get done before lockdown and friends/family to see before i can't see them for 4 weeks.

I'm pleased this time they have at lwast given us some notice!

BendingSpoons · 01/11/2020 11:42

I don't think they will be ending the restrictions in 4 weeks, so I doubt the end date matters. Businesses need a bit longer to get things sorted.

Cocomarine · 01/11/2020 11:44

My sister is quite pleased that she has the chance to sell through all the fresh food she’s already had to pay out for, for her café. And no, she won’t magically, instantly get enough takeaway orders for it not to spoil and cost her even more money.

vanillandhoney · 01/11/2020 11:46

They won't reopen in four weeks! It took at least ten weeks last time to get numbers down.

I think it's right they've given people notice this time. YABU.

honeylulu · 01/11/2020 12:01

Yes it's to allow for (hopefully sensible) planning.

I'm having my roof/chimneys/ gutters/ drainpipes overhauled or replaced and the builder now has three days to get hold of all the rest of materials he needs. A half done job abandoned until December or beyond could be disastrous in wet weather!

cologne4711 · 01/11/2020 12:01

They had to leave time for the legislation to be drafted (although I would have thought it was largely a copy and paste job from last time).

YellowBeryl1 · 01/11/2020 12:10

Yabu, what about all the businesses affected, they will need to talk to staff, make arrangements, chuck stock in the bin Sad

CynsterBitch · 01/11/2020 12:14

I think you are being very naive to think this will end on Dec 2nd.
Putting that aside, the government committed to putting future restrictions to a vote in parliament.
In this case it is largely a formality, but it’s probably not a good idea to let the government rush things through for the sake of a couple of days, they’ll quickly get used to not being held accountable.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 01/11/2020 12:42

It allows all sorts of businesses to sell perishable goods; put their lockdown changes back into place; arrange work rotas; understand the new furlough rules; talk to accountants etc.etc.

DH works all over the UK. So the timing means he will work in the SE from Monday - Wednesday and his Thursday work, up in the NW, will have been sorted by then.

I'm self employed and I get a few days to call round and re arrange, cancel or emergency book anything that needs doing.

It's just another part of the economic / public health balance.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/11/2020 12:47

It's not payday for everyone and payday doesn't affect how everyone behaves so setting lockdown round when some people get paid and how some people manage their money doesn't make sense.

I get paid on the 25th, DP gets paid every other Monday but we put all our spending on a credit card that gets paid off every month and the bills direct debits drip out of the account across the month so I can't even begin to understand how the date that lockdown starts should be linked to some people's payday.

Reedwarbler · 01/11/2020 12:48

We live in a democracy, although you would be hard pushed to spot that at the moment, so parliament will be voting on whether to implement this lockdown on Wednesday. That is the reason for the delay and no other.

unmarkedbythat · 01/11/2020 12:50

Needs to go through parliament. Wi be interesting to say the least if it doesn't go through. It will, though, labour won't vote it down, so I suppose what will be interesting is whether the Tories expressing disapproval will actually vote against it when it comes to it.

DianaT1969 · 01/11/2020 13:36

Buy what for the Christmas rush??

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/11/2020 14:20

Every cloud has a very slightly silver-lined but much larger other cloud accompanying it. At least there will be a lot of businesses in their final throes, courtesy of lockdown, who now won't need to worry about making all of the Brexit-ready preparations that they keep publicising on TV, as they won't be in existence come the new year.
