Job terror/ pandemic/ furlough. HELP?

Just in need of some advice please.

I handed in my notice a month ago and my last working day was yesterday, however I was on annual leave for the last week and a half. I was highly regarded in my previous role and they tried to retain me by offering a bigger position but not immediately in the new year. When we went in to lockdown before everyone in the company I work for was on furlough and the company topped It up to 100%, although I work in a largely commission based role so I still did lose money due to the pandemic.

My new job is due to start on Monday, however as I understand I would not be able to benefit from the furlough scheme as I am new to that company? The company I am moving to has also been a bit of a concern as prior to the last lock down they made around 1500 people redundant and had a lot of bad press about they way they did it. They got rid of a whole layer of management and through the previous lockdown did some restructuring and now have a layer of area managers of which I am one. So my new job was a big jump for me and the new proposed basic salary (alone) is double my total earnings last year including commission. Basically if I get the new job right, I have the potential to earn a lot and it’s a big jump.

BUT, I’m terrified. Do I rock up on Monday and hope for the best? I guess there’s a high chance I will be made redundant? If they furlough everyone I won’t be entitled to it. I literally can’t afford to not get paid. Or do I bail and stay in my much lower paid buy stable job. I mean assuming they would have me back a day after my employment has ended.

Click you are not being unreasonable if you think I should go back to my old job. Or you are being unreasonable if you think I should risk it, hope for the best and start the new job!

I wouldn't assume your old job would have you back to be honest, especially if they have processed you as a leaver, they would now have to justify processing you as a joiner, especially if they are looking to furlough people again- there's more to it than your old boss saying they'd like you back. Your eligibility would also be determined from your rejoin date probably, so I wouldn't count on that. You need to speak to HR at your new job tomorrow.

In the last lockdown companies were able to put leavers back on payroll so they would get the furlough scheme payments, but they didn’t have to work. I would go to your new job first and see what they suggest.

New company obviously has a plan - they made their redundancies, restructured, and you are part of that restructuring. I'd risk it.

rawlikesushi · 01/11/2020 08:41

New company would have planned for and expected a second lockdown. They restructured as part of that plan, and that includes you. I can see why you're worried but I'd turn up on Monday as planned.

work is still permitted and going on, outside of hospitality etc.

New co have recruited you even now so they must have a need.

Many firms will actually be trying to grow rather than shrink. Just because furlough is extended no compulsion to do it.

You need to go to your new job as planned and find out.

The economy has not changed

I agree with a previous poster that your new company will have expected another lockdown, I know my company have know it was coming for weeks. And we have also been recruiting recently. I’d go for it.

I assume pp meant that the outlook hasn't changed since op was recruited a couple of weeks ago.
topcat2014 · 01/11/2020 16:54

Yes correct. Assuming not hospitality or leisure the new employer is still as they were when recruiting.

Admittedly they must be feeling brave as most recruitment had stopped a while back.
