Menopause at 39??

Hangingwithmygnomies · 31/10/2020 16:49

I've just turned 39 and my periods seem to have stopped!! I was put on the mini pill after having DS2 and had to try several over the last 3/4 years as I was having extremely heavy periods and having one every other week. Eventually my GP prescribed Noristherone as a contraceptive but after 6 months another GP said I couldn't be on it anymore as it's not for long term use so I stopped taking it in March this year. I had 2 or 3 heavy periods close together and after that I didn't have one for 2/3 months, then had a period (can't remember exactly when maybe early Aug) and nothing since. Over that time, although no unprotected sex I've done several poas - latest one was Thursday - all negative so almost 0% chance I'm preggo and pretty sure I'd have noticed by now if I was lol. I'm speaking to Dr's on Monday but just wanted to get some opinions from others if you think it's likely? I know I should've gone to the Dr sooner but my husband has been under several different consultants for ongoing issues, a sibling has been diagnosed with cancer, I lost a Grandparent and dealing with an ASD child with mental health issues over Covid, I guess I just forgot about myself! AIBU to think it's possible and will a blood test confirm?

Not sure op my periods seemed to have changed this year massively.....talked to gp who said as long as I wasn't ttc it wasn't an issue. I asked for bloods which they did nothing showed????

Do you mind me asking how they've changed? I've been getting a lot of wind movement and muscle twitches the last few days (not just abdomen twitches) and just made the mistake of reading a thread where OP didn't find out until she was 7 months gone - that's my biggest fear 😳 That said over the last 6/7 months I've done about 10 tests due to paranoia over it and they've all been negative, no other pg symptoms and with my 2 DC I was huuuge and my feet swelled up so badly I looked like the Stay Puft Marshmellow man Grinso I'm certain I'm not pregnant. Just wondered what else it could be to discuss with my GP

Could be - my mother went through it in her 20s - 39 is young but not completely unheard of

MilerVino · 31/10/2020 19:00

Could well be. Menopause is quite variable. My grandmother was mid 30s and thought she was pregnant again but turned out it was just earlier than usual. Worth getting checked in case something else is causing the symptoms. Also, the peri-menopause can hang around for ages and no periods for 3 months isn't particularly unusual and might just be a general change in hormone levels.

I think it's because it's been 2 lots of 3 months whereas before I've always been regular - more frequent than most with a 14-18 day cycle more recently. Being in menopause doesn't worry me, I'd rather that than a surprise baby Grin. Does it normally run in families? I'll speak to my sister and see if she knows when our Mum or Gran went through it. I've read that stress can also stop your period? It has definitely been the worst most stressful year of my life but I've never known anyone where stress actually stopped them completely

I used to be really regular and then last year I came of the pill (was hopeful that would ease my ocd). Since then my periods have never settled can be months before I have one. Think in this year I have had 4???
I wondered if there was a problem with my thyroid??
Ive also gained weight (refuse to believe my terrible diet is to blame!!!)

Srictlybakeoff · 31/10/2020 19:59

I had my menopause at 38 - as did my mum. Periods just stopped . Lots of hot flushes tho. Wish I’d gone on hrt but didn’t . So it’s possible. Do you have menopausal symptoms- I certainly did

Skyliner001 · 31/10/2020 20:01

Hello, I experienced extreme stress at Christmas, brought period early and heavy. Then had none until April the first. All was fine until October's which didn't come, again in line with some extreme stress. The body is a strange thing. I'm 39 X

Hangingwithmygnomies · 31/10/2020 20:10

@Srictlybakeoff at the start I was having hot flushes but not many since. I have had a couple of nightime issues with weak bladder and general needing to go straight away which I did read could be a symptom, aching a lot and some issues with forgetting what I'm saying mid sentence.

@Skyliner001 honestly this year has been nothing but stress on a personal and work level. If I think about it, it coincides with when my firm had to do redundancies. They've never been affected by stress before but then again I don't think I've ever had such longevity of stress as I have this year.

My mum and nan both had it in mid 30s

Empra123 · 31/10/2020 21:15

I started menopause at 38

EugeniaGrace · 31/10/2020 21:24

I’ve had times where stress stops me getting my period so it definitely is a thing.

Have you lost or gained weight? Low bmi can also cause it to stop . Conversely, pcos can have weight gain and irregular periods as symptoms.

It might be worthy discussing stress/anxiety with your gp if it is affecting you in other ways like sleep or getting on with tasks you have to do. It’s been such a shitty year. Flowers

CanSomeoneElsePickMyName · 31/10/2020 21:40

I'm 39 too and have had five months of a period lasting only a day. I also have lots of symptoms that seem to coincide with peri menopause and also pregnancy GrinConfusedno chance of it being pregnancy though.
Heartburn, insomnia, twitchy legs at night, odd dreams etc.
I emailed the doctor yesterday and I've to collect a blood sample form from them and once I've had that they will book me in for a face to face appointment.
I've only just got my head round the fact I won't have (and don't want!) any more babies and now this. I'm not ready for it.

Hangingwithmygnomies · 31/10/2020 22:37

@EugeniaGrace I do seem to have put on a bit since I've been fuloughed, although I don't think I've been eating more. I was overweight already at a size 16 now gone to an 18 so definitely not helping. I'm back to work on Monday (well was before today's announcement and now I'm not so sure what will happen with furlough being extended) but I have had slight ovary pain today so I'll ask them if they can check for PCOS too.

@CanSomeoneElsePickMyName I'm definitely done on the baby front Grin Peri and pregnancy symtoms do seem to be horribly similar don't they?!

SherlocksDeerstalker · 31/10/2020 22:42

I’ve been in Peri since 37. It’s young, but not THAT unusual. Yes blood tests can confirm your hormone levels, and you should get checked out. I had an internal and a DEXA scan, to rule our anything underlying and to check bone density.

Hangingwithmygnomies · 31/10/2020 22:51

Thanks @SherlocksDeerstalker I'll speak to them about a blood test. Not that they'll see anything I'm sure but have also just received my smear invitation so need to book in for that too
