To think animal cruelty/abuse should get a much higher level of punishment?

I don't understand why beating a dog for example, gets such a pitiful excuse at justice and why it's seen as so different from beating up a human?

Some teens were recently doing the rounds around my area shooting cats with guns. They have killed a couple of them and I guarantee they'll get nothing but a slap on the wrist. Why?

Considering cruelty to animals is often one of the first signs of a violent person anyway, why is it not treated much more harshly in terms of justice?

Yes. I fucking hate animal abusers with a passion. I'd like, and would gladly do, the same to them.

Sertchgi123 · 30/10/2020 14:05

Yes, absolutely.

I agree. But if we were to impose stricter punishments and laws regarding animal welfare, then unfortunately many of the practices that go into meat production would then be unlawful.
Although we have some of the strictest animal welfare laws in the entire world. MPs recently voted (the day the 3 their announcement was made 🙄) to allow trade of food and meat products from countries with much much lower standards of care. The kind of farming that would result in prosecutions in the uk. So it’s time to start watching what’s on your plate and supermarket meat packet and ingredients and where they cane from. British farmers are gonna have a tough time competing with a much cheaper market of low welfare meat and animal produce. Ironic when as a group they were generally pro brexit 🤷🏼‍♀️

Its absolutely appalling. I'm an RVN, our practice works with the SSPCA and we see a fair few animal abuse cases. VERY few of them ever lead to a prosecution, it seems that in this day and age you can site 'mental health problems' and be absolved of any number of mistreatments of animals. Sometimes the animal is even released to go back to the owner which is horrific.
The ban is practically un-enforceable anyway.

mrsmrt1981 · 30/10/2020 15:20

Completely and whole heartedly agree. If I had my way the punishment would be similar to what you would get had you done it to a fellow human being. Current penalties are an absolute disgrace and it boils my blood.

almondfingers22 · 30/10/2020 15:40

Absolutely agree. Beating an animal should be an automatic prison sentence. I abhor animal cruelty of any kind. But so too should starving them. I also hate to see any animal chained up. The thing is, even if it gets to court, and they gat a ban from keeping animals, it’s usually just ignored.

Well commercially torturing, killing, and eating animals is legal so...

Sunnydaysstillhere · 30/10/2020 15:49

Last year I rang the police to report a man I saw kicking his ddog in the street. I took photos and did approach him (and his dw). Police never even called me back.

Yep. Killing a runt piglet by thumping it off the ground is legal.
Smallsteps88 · 30/10/2020 15:52

Totally agree with you, but come on, they don’t even have proper punishments for men who kill women so I’m not holding my breath.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 30/10/2020 15:53

Well domestic abuse perpetrators often start with a warning a DVPN before any action is taken then they may only get unpaid work/community service for assaulting a partner. I don't disagree with you, but when assaulting your partner carries lighter sentences than financial crimes I think there's a wider issue

Babymamaroon · 30/10/2020 21:50

YANBU. As a society we need to be far more accountable for the animals in our charge.

KarmaStar · 30/10/2020 22:34

Flowersfor you op,absolutely!,the crime should be dealt with very severely.
Anyone abusing any animal deserves everything the court can throw at them, and then some!it's cowardly and utterly disgusting.no excuses.

Phoenix76 · 31/10/2020 00:13

Agree with everyone who agrees with you, it makes me desperately sad to hear of any animal cruelty and it should absolutely not be tolerated in any society, just because animals can’t speak the human language doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be heard. I’d be very supportive of harsh dealings with people who do this.

mellongoose · 31/10/2020 07:00

Last week in parliament, Chris Loder MP brought a private member's bill to extend the maximum sentences from 6 months to 5 years. It had its second reading and will now progress.

CrisisManagement · 31/10/2020 07:05

Totally agree, but the animal agriculture industry will do their best to prevent this from happening.

Most people think of animals as just dogs and cats, giving little thought to the plight of cows, sheep, pigs, chickens forcefully bred into the meat and dairy industries.

nosswith · 31/10/2020 07:12

I agree. We should also extend bans on keeping animals- for example those who engage in fox hunting.
