People who don't indicate at roundabouts!

Having been reading the 'who's at fault' car crash thread, it got me thinking about something which really annoys me which a lot of drivers seem to do.

I'm a truck driver and need a fair bit of space to pull out, which means being fairly on the ball when at a city centre roundabout. Usually, I'm waiting for somebody to turn left so I can pull onto the roundabout.

What happens a lot is that a driver won't be indicating, so I wait in the assumption that they are going straight ahead. But then they turn left without indicating, which is infuriating as it means I could've gone had they signalled their intentions earlier, but now it's too late and I'm stuck in the stream of traffic behind them.

Even worse, but less common, is those idiots who turn right but don't indicate and almost cause a crash as drivers opposite them pull out not realising they are continuing around the roundabout. Had a woman slam on brakes and beep me today for almost pulling out in front of her, but she wasn't indicating that she intended to turn right. Had me muttering to myself for a good minute or so after! 😂

Someone failed to signal at a roundabout this morning when I was waiting to go. I moaned at them from the safety of my car.

My DH would introduce capital punishment for people who don't indicate at roundabouts. A bit harsh maybe [grin}, but might have the desired effect - and the German car manufacturers would have to install them in their cars Grin.

cologne4711 · 31/10/2020 11:41

Also annoying is people who are turning right, but don't switch their indicator from right to left as they approach the turn they want.

knickybricks · 31/10/2020 11:42

@StanfordPines

When I took my advanced test with the IAM, they said to only indicate if there is somebody else who would benefit from it, including pedestrians etc.

But why wouldn’t you indicate every time? It’s not like it costs money and as you say there is a chance of someone you can’t see who needs to see it.
What a stupid thing to teach people.

One of ds’s friends scored a minor fault in their test for indicating when there was no one behind or in front.
Penners99 · 31/10/2020 11:50

If you think your life is meaningless, please spare a thought for the car workers that fit indicators to BMW and Audi cars!

housemdwaswrong · 31/10/2020 11:50

@cologne4711 I'm with your husband. I'm sure I could have done an extra journey every week the amount of time I spend waiting for cars on roundabout to pass when they are turning. It infuriates me. :)

They shouldn't have got a fault for that. There's no harm in doing it.

That is madness. What about pedestrians? And what is the harm in signalling every time? If you do it every single manoeuvre then it becomes second nature.

sbhydrogen · 31/10/2020 12:16

They're probably all BMW drivers.

(Indicators are an optional extra)

What's the problem with people using the left lane for the second exit? Perfectly ok to do that, signalling left once past the first exit

No it isn’t because the car in the right/straight in lane has expected you to disappear down the first left exit and you are now in their way, either cutting in ground or causing them to slow down, or you haven’t noticed and likely to hit them side on

If there are two lanes on the approach to the roundabout, I was taught by my driving instructor that you use the left lane for turning left and going straight on, and the right for any exit after that.
DynamoKev · 31/10/2020 12:32

It's pretty simple, really

People who don't indicate at roundabouts!
DynamoKev · 31/10/2020 12:32

People who don't bother to indicate are cunts.

You are 100% wrong.
CoronaIsWatching · 31/10/2020 12:34

Drivers who don't indicate are arseholes. Especially those ones who don't indicate for pedestrians. Crossing a junction to have a car suddenly swerve towards you is terrifying.

AliceMcK · 31/10/2020 12:35

It completely annoys me too. I learnt to drive overseas and couldn’t believe how bad drivers here are. I was always under the impression that UK drivers were good drivers until I moved back. There are several roundabouts where I live, people dont even get in the right lane let alone indicate. If the traffic is even slightly heavy I will go the long way home to to avoid the roundabouts, especially when I have my DCs in the car.

McPie · 31/10/2020 12:44

I passed my test in January and I was taught to always indicate. I was told to indicate even if it was on a left/right turn only as my instructor said the markings on the road whilst visable to a driver might not be to a pedestrian! It's not exactly a difficult or time consuming thing to remember or do!

BrokenCrown · 31/10/2020 12:45

@User43210
"Another frustration is on a dual carriageway, I hate when a driver starts to pull into a lane then indicates when they're already halfway across - like what's the point?! You're meant to indicate before you manoeuvre. I get that once or twice it may be an "oops I forgot to indicate" but not every time!"

My mum does this and it drives me CRAZY!!!! If I'm in the passenger seat she slaps my hand away when I get fed up and indicate for her
She claims she's waiting for space to move before indicating.
That would be fine except she starts moving first
I have told her that if she indicated people would be more likely to let her out
She says noone let's people out
I say noone will let you out if you don't INDICATE WHERE YOU WANT TO GO!!

Inside I am chanting
Mirror
Signal
Manoeuvre (position, speed, check)
As taught by my driving instructor

Left lane is for anything before 12 o'clock and right is for anything after, unless the road markings dictate different.
User43210 · 31/10/2020 12:51

@BrokenCrown glad it's not just me that gets annoyed at family driving and their rubbish use of indicators.

Personally, if I see someone sat in the next lane in traffic and indicating (as long as they haven't used that lane to cut out some traffic like a knob) then I would always let them in. If I see someone trying to edge in or indicating as I'm moving in the last second, they can wait.

In your mum's case, if she's waiting for a space, firstly she isn't letting people behind her know why she's not moving. Secondly, if she's happy to wait for a space, it won't actually harm her to indicate 😂 the most that could happen is someone would be nice and let her in.

I feel your pain.

Not of the road markings indicate a left land and a right/straight over lane

Which they mostly don't.
emummy · 31/10/2020 13:35

My dad always said that when you see someone indicating the only thing it means is that their indicators work. He was a sales rep, drove all day and had a very low opinion of most other drivers! Driving with him in the car was terrifying.
I grew up in a new town full of roundabouts; drives me mad when people don’t indicate, drive in random lanes etc

BluebellsGreenbells · 31/10/2020 13:35

They do and it’s surprising how many people don’t read the raid markings

Few near misses
