A lot. She was a talker before walker.

Is your child a girl or boy? Do they have any siblings? Can they follow commands?

Camomila · 29/10/2020 15:11

Mine was talking in short sentences by then. He was also a late walker.

Aria2015 · 29/10/2020 15:13

I had an early talker. First words at 9 months and so by 2 he was talking (non-stop!) in full sentences. He was a talker rather than a mover though, so was behind on some of his physical milestones, he's thankfully caught up now.

EricaRo · 29/10/2020 15:14

She's a girl and yes she has siblings.

She knows people's names and will say them again and again on loop, which is sweet. She can ask for what she wants by saying the words e.g. juice, some, sweets etc.

She can follow some basic comments e.g. "can you pass me the toy" or "can you get your coat" but among the audible words there is still alot of babble, baby talk.

The reason I'm asking is because I have a niggling suspicion that she may be on the spectrum, there is a family history of autism on her dad's side (including two half siblings) so although she can speak a little - my feeling is that she's a bit behind.

I know delayed speech isn't the only indicator of ASD by the way, but I know it's harder to spot in girls.

Another potential red flag is that she will bang her head on the floor when she's upset.

He wasn’t . Hardly a word . He never shuts up now .

SnuggyBuggy · 29/10/2020 15:16

Is she just turned 2? A lot can happen between 2 and 3 or even 2 and 2.5.

Mellonsprite · 29/10/2020 15:16

Different for each child, my DS1 could talk in full sentences and hold a reasonable ‘conversation’ and argue back at 18m, DS2 was slightly older, whereas DD didn’t until she was nearly 3, and her speech wasn’t very clear then either.

EricaRo · 29/10/2020 15:18

She has just turned two as of last month yes

OP posts:
Ignoringequally · 29/10/2020 15:19

DD1 was talking in full sentences by 2. DD2 was talking in full sentences by 18 months. DS has a handful of words at 22 months and I’m concerned he is on the spectrum too.

downwithallthesenamechanges · 29/10/2020 15:19

Dd was quite delayed, to the point of nursery bringing it up and seeing the health visitor over it. She could say words and knew people's names but not really sentences. We went on holiday when she was 2 years & 5 months, she started talking properly in the space of that week and hasn't shut up since!

InTheLongGrass · 29/10/2020 15:20

At just turned two, about half a dozen words.
3 months later, and he had full sentences and hasn't shut up since

BrigitsBigKnickers · 29/10/2020 15:21

If you are conferenced about her speech then do get her hearing checked. Sometimes early flags for ASD can be confused with a hearing loss.

Ninkanink · 29/10/2020 15:22

One of mine was a very early talker - talking in whole sentences by 18 months, and quite fluent by 2. My other one started saying her 1st few words at just under 2 and was talking in short sentences by about 2 and a half.

toomuchpeppapig · 29/10/2020 15:24

My DS turned 2 this month and he doesn't talk much at all. He still babbles quite a bit and doesn't speak very clearly at all when he is trying to talk. He has a 1 year old brother.

He did start walking at 10 months old (not that I think that makes any difference) and used to talk more a few months ago. He could say the names of lots of animals but now will only make the noises.... 🤦🏻‍♀️

We had his 2 year HV check a few weeks ago and she wasn't concerned, and tbh, neither am I. I'm sure he'll start talking more when he wants to.

A lot of 2 year olds don't talk a lot. I don't think it's anything to worry about in itself, though he is my first child, so I could be wrong and far too relaxed about it!

ThePants999 · 29/10/2020 15:24

My DD is 27 months. Her comprehension is fine, but her spoken language is maybe 50 words including a few two-word combinations like "sit down", and her ability to actually form sounds is way behind. She struggles with many consonants and is very hard to understand. I have no concerns about autism, it's just a slight speech delay.

My DS was a bit ahead of her at this point but still well behind peers. He's now 4 and, um... "garrulous".

Trousersareoverrated · 29/10/2020 15:25

She sounds like she is doing fine. My dd could say a few words together at 2 but some of her friends still can’t at 2.5.

If you are worried about autism other tell tale signs are hand flapping and walking on her tip toes.

Ignoringequally · 29/10/2020 15:26

I spoke to the health visitor recently about my concerns about DS and was told that no hearing test referrals were currently being made due to Covid. Hope other areas are better.
Mindymomo · 29/10/2020 15:28

My son wasn’t speaking at 2, he used to point for anything he wanted and if he wanted a drink he would make a sipping sound with his mouth. He was my first son so I didn’t have anything to go by, friends and family said they all achieve things at different times. The health visitor was concerned and said she would phone in 6 months to check his progress. She rang and I was able to put him on the phone to talk to her as he had found his voice and caught up quickly. He also never crawled but walked at 10 months.

SinkGirl · 29/10/2020 15:28

She’s understanding language, following directions and using some words in the correct context - I wouldn’t be overly concerned. My twins are autistic, both 4 and neither speak nor understand words. I have friends whose autistic children do speak but don’t understand requests, or what they are saying, or say things in the correct context.

What are your other concerns about ASD?

SinkGirl · 29/10/2020 15:29

DT1 had a hearing test a couple of weeks ago so they are happening in some places!

jessstan1 · 29/10/2020 15:29

Quite a lot but i knew people whose children didn't say or hardly said one word until later and one very bright lady I know did not speak at all until she was three. Some younger children leave all the talking to their chatterbox elder sibling(s) too. There's no set rule about when they talk.

EricaRo · 29/10/2020 15:30

Thanks for the replies, It's interesting hearing how your LO's developed.

DD doesn't walk on her tiptoes but she does occasionally hand flap (when excited), my biggest concern is the banging her head. I'm told DSS did that when he was small and he has since been diagnosed with autism.

Her hearing is perfect, confirmed by audiology.

OP posts:
RedMarauder · 29/10/2020 15:31

OP she is definitely not behind in regards to speech.

Ignoringequally · 29/10/2020 15:31

Glad to hear it! All my concerns were completely brushed off.
SinkGirl · 29/10/2020 15:31

One of my autistic twins does both - the other does neither. These are two potential signs from a large list - i would be looking more at things like lack of shared attention, pointing and eye contact, but these are not conclusive either.
