To be happy that the boxing Day sales will probably be cancelled?

I used to work in M&S. In the year before I left, my store started opening on Boxing Day.

None of us, even the managers, wanted to work the (completely unnecessary) Boxing Day shift (which began at 7am!!!)

Even worse, 90% of the customers were miserable and complaining about the fact that we were open!

-"I can't believe you're open today. You should be getting the day off like the rest of us..."

  • "In my day, the sales started in January."
  • "Companies like yours are just greedy opening on a day like this."

and on and on and on...

I no longer work in retail, but I'm hoping that with lockdown looming, the sales will be moved back a few days this year, giving retail staff a much needed festive break.

Who's with me?

So people went shopping but moaned that you were open?

floppybit · 28/10/2020 22:35

Yes, totally agree. I used to work in retail and used to hate having to be at work on bank holidays, Christmas, NY when other people were enjoying time off with their family. Hope you get a break this year

CakeRequired · 28/10/2020 22:45

So people went shopping but moaned that you were open?

People are stupid. No further explanation needed.

TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 28/10/2020 22:48

They won’t cancel them, they can’t stop shops reducing their prices.

There might be a limited of people per shop though.

If they banned Boxing Day opening, you’d just get the same thing the following day.

CakeRequired · 28/10/2020 22:51

I don't get why they can't just have it online only though and refuse to have shops open. Then people get the day off.

DinoTeam · 28/10/2020 22:51

Our company are closing for the first time on Boxing Day this year. I always work Christmas Eve so the close doesn’t impact me but I’m pleased for my colleagues who would have had to work Boxing Day.

I can absolutely believe people moaning about the shops being open whilst shopping aswell.

PodgeBod · 28/10/2020 22:52

This used to happen to me when I worked retail. People wandering in, amazed we were open, spending money whilst telling us how awful it was...

WinWinnieTheWay · 28/10/2020 22:53

I think stores should be closed but that online sales should go ahead.

nancy75 · 28/10/2020 22:53

I doubt if most retailers will be waiting until Boxing Day to launch sales this year, I don’t think most can afford to hold out that long.

amusedtodeath1 · 28/10/2020 22:56

It would be nice to get through Christmas day without the "SALE, SALE, SALE" adds ruining the Christmas vibe. I just spent a fortune on Christmas I don't want to buy anything for at least another month! YANBU.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 28/10/2020 23:00

I'd be amazed if shops aren't open on boxing day tbh. There's no appetite from government to close businesses down at the moment. I absolutely don't think it should be online only, that would be the final nail in the coffin for the high Street and shopping centres and as convenient as online shopping is, I don't really want derelict towns and millions of job losses if retail loses its most profitable quarter.

Killerqueen2244 · 28/10/2020 23:04

Next are advertising temporary Christmas jobs with being required to work till 6pm on Christmas Eve then start again at 6am on Boxing Day. Hmm

Will be interesting to see how they manage the sale this year and if people will still be willing to queue for potentially hours for a half price viscose top...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 28/10/2020 23:09

@JayAlfredPrufrock

That's general public for you.

My friend had people tell him how horrible it was that people had to work Christmas time WHILE MAKING A BOOKING FOR CHRISTMAS FUCKING DAY. 🤦

ViciousJackdaw · 28/10/2020 23:10

@EnglishGirlApproximately Agreed, businesses need to stay afloat or there will be catastrophic effects. Let's bear in mind that many people will be happy to work on Boxing Day. Some will be desperate for the money, others will welcome the distraction as Christmas isn't full of glittery magic for everyone. If you don't like the shops being open then stay at home. Don't like the adverts? Ignore them.

TeamLucille · 28/10/2020 23:17

Last year most sales started before Boxing Day anyway. People are so obsessed about the idea of getting something for nothing (and what they think is a good deal) that it's unlikely. The social distancing is going to be interesting.

Derekhello · 28/10/2020 23:18

@JayAlfredPrufrock

Yes this is a thing - I also work in retail and customers come in on Boxing Day saying “you should be closed today” etc. 🙄 Wandering around browsing, some of them don’t even buy anything.
peachweach · 28/10/2020 23:25

I don't think they'll be cancelled, last year some even started on Christmas Eve if I'm remembering properly? I think the shops will need the money this year especially, so it's not necessarily a bad thing as long as it's distanced properly. I don't work in retail now but can totally sympathise with those who do and don't want to work it - when I was a student I worked for Next and worked until 6pm on Christmas Eve, then back in at 4am (!!) on Boxing Day for the dreaded sale... I've never seen grown women act like they did at the Next sales anywhere else!

sorryforswearing · 28/10/2020 23:25

Totally agree with you. I’ve never thought stores should open on Boxing Day and that staff shouldn’t be expected to work. I think in past years Home Bargains and Aldi haven’t opened and have said it’s so their staff could have a much deserved break. When my nieces were younger they could never have Christmas with our family (I’m 150 miles away) because they had to be back in their home town for Boxing Day opening. It’s totally unnecessary. Mind you personally I can’t understand why anyone would want to go shopping on Boxing Day. Far better ways to spend it.

GabsAlot · 28/10/2020 23:37

i agree i think everything should be shut this year

can you imagine the queues -i always thin itsa bit sad going to the sales the day after christmas

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/10/2020 23:44

A boxing day close would be nice.

And yes customers really do ask a shop is open, what are we doing here at this time of the day/night etc
The best one was " they really shouldn't have two women here this late"

Stop coming in then Hmm

PickAChew · 28/10/2020 23:47

Shops selling their stock is what keeps them open and providing employment for people.

NonCisWoman · 29/10/2020 00:29

I dont want any business to go bust, quite the opposite, but shops should be closed Boxing Day. If everyone did it, then nobody would lose money surely?

GirlCrush · 29/10/2020 00:32

Our large company have also decided we will be closed on Boxing Day!

FreshfieldsGal · 29/10/2020 05:19

Agree that shops should be closed on Boxing Day for the sake of the staff. I can't see the normal hordes of people going shopping anyway with Covid, most people I know are shopping online (but we're in a Tier 3 area.)
