to want to open the back door and the windows for a couple of hours in the morning this time of year?

My OH (we don't live together) says I'm obsessed with fresh air and wishes I didn't open the back door and most of the windows every morning for a couple of hours when the weather is no longer mild as it is in the summer. He's quite happy to open a window for ten minutes and that's it. When I stay at his I wish he did get more fresh air in but it's his place and he can do as he pleases of course.

I like to get fresh air in the house in the morning, especially since I have three dogs (the place - I've often been told - does NOT smell of dogs. Possibly because there is no carpet in the house and the dogs are not allowed on the beds and because of the above window opening!) and believe it's important to get rid of the overnight, stale air and also try to discourage mould/condensation, bacteria, etc. linked to not opening windows for long enough, often enough.

The heating isn't on when the door and the windows are open but comes on afterwards. I do admit that in between me closing everything and the place getting warm it takes a little while because the fresh air is cooler than the air that was in the house. So I was wondering whether IABU.

It really doesn't take two hours to get fresh air into a house, and it shouldn't be necessary to open everything up anyway if the house has normal ventilation arrangements. Try doing it for 20 minutes in winter at most - it'll have precisely the same effect except that your house will be warmer.

Windows open most of the year, usually only get fully closed if it snows but that is so rare now.

No damp/mould issues here anymore.... when I moved in it was clear the previous owners never had the windows open, black mould in the corners of rooms and on the window frames.

Not a sign of since I moved in c3 years ago.

I love the feel of fresh air.

When I stay at my parents I feel like I'm suffocating, my dad has a massive aversion to having windows/doors open and keeps the downstairs windows locked and keys hidden. Luckily their house does not have any issues with damp or mould.

Drives me insane.

When cold outside, assuming you do have some heating on, It adds pollution & wastes energy so exacerbates climate change. Not a socially responsible thing to do.

On a personal note, I would hate to have a raging draft thru my house for hours every day.

MoonJelly · 27/10/2020 15:15

I'm quite bemused by people who say they need to do this otherwise their house feels overheated. Fine in the summer, but surely in the winter that just indicates that you should turn your heating down?

jonny9487 · 27/10/2020 15:17

He’s a guest and he’s cold. I say close the windows or at least put the heating on.

What? Put the heating on when all the doors and windows are open?

banivani · 27/10/2020 15:17

Airing out houses/opening windows is apparently an fundamental part of German culture and has been announced as a cornerstone in the fight against the coronavirus. Say you’re following the tenets if Angela Merkel! www.thelocal.de/20201001/lften-why-germans-are-obsessed-with-the-art-of-airing-out-rooms

bellinisurge · 27/10/2020 15:19

Windows open all day even though there are two of us working from home. Weird not to.

RonaRossi · 27/10/2020 15:20

I love fresh air and during warmer weather the windows and doors are open all day long.

2 hours seems excessive to me though for winter. I open my windows every day in every room but a good 15 minute blast is plenty to circulate the air and get that fresh air feel imo.

bellinisurge · 27/10/2020 15:21

Heat maybe goes on about 3 in the middle of winter if someone is in the house

Holothane · 27/10/2020 15:22

We have windows open but once it get chilly at night they’re shut.

H3LPm3 · 27/10/2020 15:23

I do the same OP, feel like I need fresh air without leaving the house... In every room! My parents think I'm crazy.

Crack on, your house.

ViciousJackdaw · 27/10/2020 15:23

I like to air my house daily too - bedroom window is opened just before I leave the room in the morning (duvet pulled back too) and the spare room window is always slightly open unless in use.

I open the back door when I'm cooking, whatever the weather and leave it open when eating. I don't have everything open all at the same time, I just like to freshen the bedroom in the morning then freshen the kitchen after cooking in the evening. You cannot beat fresh clean air, much nicer than candles, reeds and other fragranced shite.

Periwinkletoes · 27/10/2020 15:29

I also heard that about the Germans. Now when DH complains I've got the windows open again I tell him I'm just giving the house a good merkeling.

justasking111 · 27/10/2020 15:31

My bedroom window is wide open as I type. Door shut, no radiators on. In the mornings when I clean open the windows all through the year. We have dogs so like to air the place. It is personal preference.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 27/10/2020 15:34

I always pull duvets back and open the windows to air the house in the morning, usually for 40 mins to an hour depending on what I'm doing.

I wouldn't open the back door though. Aren't all your internal doors constantly slamming?

Lolwhat · 27/10/2020 15:34

I have the backdoor open for most of the day in the winter because my dog hasn’t quite grasped the concept of holding it yet, I only close it when it’s raining, I love a fresh smelling room

1forAll74 · 27/10/2020 15:36

I always open the door and windows whatever time of year. I can't be doing with everything shut up. Its raining quite heavily here, and my three cats are all sitting in a row on the back door mat at the open door, and staring at the rain drops pattering down, it's funny to watch them.

Casschops · 27/10/2020 15:38

I open the back door, back window and front window for about an hour. I can
I It letting night out.

SweetAlmondOil · 27/10/2020 15:40

The back door is mainly open to allow the dogs to go in and out without me having to get up every time they need a pee or something. And because it is a really quick way to get the stale air out and fresh air in so it's nice and fresh when I have breakfast. Nothing slams when it's open...

First thing i do in the morning is open the back door, if we haven't got a coastal gale i will open the front door as well. I need fresh air in the morning. Do what you wat and never mind what anyone else thinks.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 27/10/2020 15:48

That makes sense. It must be the layout of our house — we get a bit of a wind tunnel so doors tend to bang.

TatianaBis · 27/10/2020 15:52

2 hours seems a bit much in winter but then I don’t have dogs as I can’t bear the smell.

But I am an inveterate window flinger. Regularly open the windows in our bedroom to air it during the day. And I insist of turning off the radiator in our bedroom at night so it doesn’t come on at 6 with the rest of the heating. Infuriates my husband as he wakes to a cold room. I say the rest of the house is warm so it doesn’t matter!

Deelish75 · 27/10/2020 16:05

I open our bedroom windows for an hour each morning once we’re all dressed. I live in an old house which gets damp quite easily so it’s good to give it an airing.

WanderingMilly · 27/10/2020 16:07

Of course you can open the windows and change the air in the house....it's very healthy, the stale air does need changing. Modern living with central heating etc. makes us unhealthy and unable to cope with what is perfectly normal weather for the time of the year....

I have a window open all the time, even in cold winter and always overnight in the bedroom. I also change the air daily and have a proper blow through. When I lived in Scandinavia it was normal, and their temperatures were really low in winter, anything between -10 to -25 degrees! And they are a much healthier population...

yeOldeTrout · 27/10/2020 16:08

Nothing slams when it's open

Ah. That's different from here. Very windy most days since September where I live, and probably same until May.
