Hi sorry posting here for trafic.

We had some beautiful little puppys born a week ago, when we went to weigh them this morning we noticed this appear on all 4 of the puppys shoulders.

We of course took them straight to our vets, who were amazing. But basically said if it doesn't clear up in a week or start to improve then its likely a very painful genetic condition which is sadly untreatable. Meaning we'd have have no other option than to pts.

Obviously we want to and will do everything we physically can for them, I just wondered if anyone has any idea or experience with what this could be, please?! We wondered if it was possibly down to the collars rubbing? But we're truly clutching at straw's.

Any help or advice we'd be incredibally grateful for. Thank you.

That's so sad Sad I hope you get some helpful advice.

Reedwarbler · 26/10/2020 22:07

I don't know anything about this condition, but in your shoes I would be seeking a second opinion. What you have been told sounds rather vague. Were any tests or skin scrapings taken? It sounds a bit hasty to write the whole litter off. Vets do vary terrifically in knowledge and expertise. Find yourself an expert.

I'd lose the collars just in case tbh (Why do they need them, they're tiny.) .Did they give you any antibiotic ointment & did they take samples of the patches for lab analysis? If not, I'd try bathing gently with warm saline 3 times a day (salt & water that's been boiled then cooled). Then get a 2nd opinion if it's not clearing. What genetic condition did they think it was, they could have at least mentioned what lines they were thinking along.

I agree they need a specialist opinion. They are adorable
I hope it is something that can be treated. Did mum have any health issues or infections. What treatment has the vet suggested.

AlCalavicci · 26/10/2020 22:22

It is hard to say without been able to look properly but I agree with PP get rid of the collers , get a second vet to have a look .
is it in the same place on each pup ?
Could they of come into contact with somthing caustic ?
Is the mum over washing them ?

Sorry I cant be of any help , I hope you can get it sorted out

yorkshirecountrylass · 26/10/2020 22:23

Echo the advice of previous poster, lose the collars they don't need them this young and seek a second vet opinion, preferably tomorrow. Good luck 🤞

Aganthosis nigricans maybe...

CSIblonde · 26/10/2020 22:31

Pets.webmd.com has a slideshow with pictures of the 20 most common skin issues in dogs, causes & treatment . Might be worth a look.

PurpleDachshunds · 26/10/2020 22:39

Thank you so much for all the advice, I really appreciate it. I will defiantly get a seccond opinion. The collars have now been removed, sorry I should have added that.

The vet did try to get samples but I dont think she wasn't able to as the skin is very hard. I will call back tomrorow and ask for the name of the condition she thinks it could be.

Its in the same place on each pup, some have it worse than the others. They are perfectly happy and healthy otherwise, it just came on so suddenly.

Thank you ClarasZoo and CSIblonde I will look them up.

The collars are so you can differentiate between each puppy to make sure they are putting on a constant weight etc

CSIblonde · 28/10/2020 14:58

Any news on the puppies OP? Hoping it was something not serious.
