I am a HCP in health social care, I can t say what field . I am supposed to do part time office hours writing reports. That's what I'm paid doe, I wish. We are killing ourselves i can't say more other than we are drowning - Unpaid overtime- to keep people safe

It's very hard. We are under appreciated

Is anyone else doing far more than their hours and working flat out to recover people and keep them safe from and during Covid times?

Damn have asked for title to be changed

OP posts:
Spidey66 · 25/10/2020 18:06

Sorry, I don't understand. Are you a HCP or a social worker?

LakieLady · 25/10/2020 18:07

It sounds like hell, OP.

What would happen if you just did as much as you can do in the hours you are paid for?

Tryingourbest23 · 25/10/2020 18:11

Sorry, I asked for title to change as I'd written that and changed it and it hadn't saved!! Typical 🤨

I am a medical social worker

I am working hard as are all my health and social care colleagues

Flat out and no respite since March 2020 and it's getting worse

OP posts:
Tryingourbest23 · 25/10/2020 18:14

Everybody thinks it has passed and it hasn't as I haven't finished before 7 pm any working day nor not tried to start at 7am . It's hard out there and we are working flat out to keep people safe

I can't and nor can my colleagues

It's our people in our community

Well done. I just lost my job and have no income. You are lucky to have a job, I'm sure you already know that.

StormzyInaDCup · 25/10/2020 18:19

Same with a lot of jobs I'd imagineim in child social work, those on the ground are doing 60-80 hours easy a week. Managers a little less as its all desk based.

My friends, are nurses, pa's, receptionists, ceo's, supermarket managers.. They're all working their asses off. Over and above! I'm not sure what you're looking for here, but no one profession is working harder than another (we'll unless your front line dealing medically with covid imho). 💐

Yes, I'm so sorry for you x

I know I have it great except I'm exhausted
I'm so sorry to hear you have lost your income. Maybe come join my field as plenty of work

Is this a lockdown thing?

I have mental health issues. I have not been well at all through early lockdown. I did to get in touch with any services because I’m not sure they can do anything - but I am sure they are overwhelmed.

StormzyInaDCup · 25/10/2020 18:19

Oh the typos 🍷

Nice to see the Suffering Olympics haven't been cancelled.

It's possible to commiserate with someone who is overworked and placed under intolerable stress and also to think it's terrible for people to lose their jobs. It really isn't a competition.

Not looking for anything Just reminding people how hard we are all working They seem to forget It's true all those professions are working extremely hard and deserve recognition too and it's good you reminded me when I fall into bed exhausted

Lucky to have a job, when people are killing themselves trying to do this job, due to the impossible demands and relentless pace? Seriously?

I feel sorry for you that you have lost your job, and have no income, and can understand your bitterness as a result.

But OP, I have no solutions, but I am so full of sympathy for you. My sister and BIL are a medical social worker, and social worker, in another country, and they are reporting similar issues with burnout.

Spidey66 · 25/10/2020 18:22

I know the feeling-im a CPN in the single point of access. I'm always secretly pleased when service users don't attend for appointments. One less assessment to write up and mo 're time to focus on the increasing amount of safeguarding alerts to investigate.

On top of that, services are cut to the bone, so once I've assessed someone, there's no service provision. IAPT say many of the people I 'refer are too complex. When I attempt to refer them on for psychotherapy there's a good chance they're not suitable for them either. I was told one I referred wasn't suitable because herq housing was unstable. She was living with her mum and step dad who's abused her in the past. She was actually engaging with Shelter around her housing so by the time her name came to the top for therapy, hopefully this would be resolved.

I have it. I hate having patients telling me painful stories only for me to say sorry, can't help you.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 25/10/2020 18:22

Just think it's an insensitive thread when many are struggling to put food on the table at the moment.

But that's my opinion, and the OP has apologised which I accept.

Bowing out if this thread now

I'm so sorry to hear that xxx don't be alone as all of us are working flat out so you aren't alone

Can I signpost you? Pm me and say where you are if you can't find out as I know where is signpost you to in my area which would be a fab service

Ffsnosexallowed · 25/10/2020 18:25

I work with adult social work and health - empathise with you op. I don't think the general public realise what an essential service sw provide, or how under pressure it is just now. There WILL be an end to this xxx

AcornAutumn · 25/10/2020 18:27

OP

That’s really sweet of you - I’m okay.

Please look after yourself too 💐

I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset anyone and I had written different title but it didn't save and argh!

Never intended to upset anyone

Know that people have lost their jobs

Know that people are dying through their jobs

Know that my colleagues and I are drowning as are many other people in their jobs

Just asking if anyone else is drowning because of COVID and doing double their hours (unpaid) or more because they can't let people be at risk?

OP posts:
SquashedFlyBiscuits · 25/10/2020 18:28

Hi OP I hear you.

Thank you for all the hard work you are doing. Lot's of people appreciate what you do.

Can you book a day's annual leave just to give yourself a long weekend?

Try to look after yourself. I know that is hard.

SheepandCow · 25/10/2020 18:30

It's a shame the billions wasted on failed companies like Serco and on the reported furlough fraud didn't instead go on employing extra staff.

Two in one solution. Giving work to those made redundant elsewhere and taking the pressure off our health and social carers. Whilst not qualified to do everything I'm sure there's a lot of admin and similar that doesn't need previous industry experience.

Thank you for helping to keep vulnerable people safe OP.

StormzyInaDCup · 25/10/2020 18:31

You're right @Tryingourbest23 apologies, I took it for a woe is me thread.

It's hard, really hard. There's no unbroken sleep without dreaming of the to do list or waking up thinking of something you've missed!

Take your breaks and push back.. I keep telling my teams that no one will put money into a service if people, are getting the work done. No one cares if we burn out doing it, as long as they don't have to up that budget.

Take care and sw is an amazing, sometimes thankless job. But that one day and that one case makes it worth it 😉

mbosnz · 25/10/2020 18:32

I don't think you're being insensitive OP. You're reaching out for some empathy, validation, understanding of what those in your field are dealing with, and hoping to get some fellowship with others in a similar situation. Which seems to me to be a very healthy and natural thing to do!

Is your employer doing anything to attempt to mitigate the negative impacts on you and your colleagues physical and mental wellbeing?

SparklingLime · 25/10/2020 18:32

That sounds so incredibly challenging, OP. I will be needing adult services for my dad shortly so I will now be more aware of the pressures they’re under.

I’m sorry you’ve had less than helpful responses. You are doing a vital job.

And yes, Stormzy, some professions are working under significantly more pressure than others. To say otherwise is ridiculous.
