have just taken ds (6) and ds (4) to the theatre to see 'lazy town'. i think i need to remortgage the house now. it must have cost 100 quid with 4 tickets, drinks, ice cream and a programme!! its just the local theatre for heavens sake. and i know i could have taken drinks and sweets with us but i wasn't expecting four drinks and a box of smarties to cost £11.60!!! they know how to make money. show was excellent though and the boys loved it!

The moral of the story............. do what I do. Pack your own snacks!

It's a real pig isn't it?

CappuScreamO · 14/10/2007 20:26

real children's theatre doesn't cost that much

real lovely non commercialised beautiful theatre

TV theatre is just there to make cash

TwigorTreat · 14/10/2007 20:27

can't afford to take kids to theatre

can barely afford the pictures

Aero · 14/10/2007 20:27

Ratatouille cost us £25 yesterday and I did take my own popcorn and drinks. There are five of us and that was the cineworld cinema - the Odeon would have cost about £8 more. The theatre locally isn't too bad for certain shows though and we also usually take our own sweets etc. We don't go too often, but the pantomime would set us back over £50 if we decide to go.

Leslaki · 14/10/2007 20:31

crkm, you're not in NOrthampton are you? We saw Lazytown at Derngate yesterday and thoughtthe cost wasn't too bad - we were in a box (!!!!!) and it was only£38 for the 3 of us - we went with friends and took our own snacks, drinks etc and refused to buy any of the overpriced merchandise.

have to agree generally tho as tried to book panto the other night - for 5 tickets MK was £125!!!!! - Going to NL for 4 nights next week for family of 4 for £140!!! Where's the logic?!! Managed to book panto for Xmas evce at small theatre in Wellingborough for £9 a head which was better!

Gobbledispook · 14/10/2007 20:31

We went to see Ratatouille tonight with the boys (3 of them) - £33 for teh tickets but I took our own sweets out of the treat tin and a bottle of water from the fridge.

My mother will fall over when she hears that!!

Already forked out £89 for pantomime in January. Will be taking own food then aswell!

CappuScreamO · 14/10/2007 20:32

Gobble I am that the Brewery isn't doing panto this year

that wasn't so expensive and it was sweet

we don't do Big Theatre we do small

Gobbledispook · 14/10/2007 20:33

This is at the Lowry - I am a bit cross with myself for booking it because Cinderella at the Palace looks better.

The Brewery??

CappuScreamO · 14/10/2007 20:35

leslaki - yep we are in northampton!!! when i got tickets i was offered a family ticket which i accepted, cost £64 for four seats. not till later did i see the prices in a leaflet and realised we could have got it cheaper not having the "family ticket" i was silly not to ask for prices but thought that the family group would be cheaper. will know for next time. and the pantomime last year was even more expensive. still from now on it will be take our own drinks and sweets and sneak a look at the neighbours programme!!

I am lucky in that my mum buys the kids tickets for shows for their birthday and xmas other wise mine would never go either. This year they are going to see Peter Pan and Disney on Ice.

We always take out own drinks and snacks.

I did last year take the Dd's to Disney princesses on ice and the popcorn was £3 a go .

Gobbledispook · 14/10/2007 20:41

D'you know what - I don't think I ever went to the theatre as a child! Maybe once or twice tops.

crkm · 14/10/2007 20:43

the kids had such a good time and it was worth it to see the smiles. even though the brat behind me kept whacking my head with her flashing sword thing and ds(4) ended up on my lap cause there was a tall man in the seat in front of him!!

come on Gobble

you know you want to

janeiteofthelivingdead · 14/10/2007 20:48

A couple of our local theatres do family tickets for around £35 to £40, which I think is good value - we try to at least a couple of productions each year. But the "big" theatres, which charge around £20 a head, are just having a laugh really. It makes me really cross as theatre shouldn't be elitest - and there are so many children that never get to go to the theatre because of the silly money it costs.

Don't "do" panto though - so have no idea how much that costs!

nutcracker · 14/10/2007 20:52

If The Snowman is on by anyone this year then I would really reccomend that, it is absolutly fantastic and so magical.

CappuScreamO · 15/10/2007 09:47

the last children's theatre at my local theatre would have cost us less than £30 to go to even if we all went

but I often take dd1 on my own as a treat
