To have impulsively hacked my hair off with crappy scissors?!

Been wanting to get DH to cut my hair for ages. Ordered scissors which turned out to be cheap 'n' nasty. Spent the morning watching girl after girl on youTube show me how to cut my own hair. They all did a beautiful job of their lovely long swishy hair.

Well, I just thought "Fuck it, I'm not waiting for another pair of scissors to arrive. Let's do this!"

So while DH is watching F1 I've just merrily hacked away. Of course, being me, I couldn't be bothered to wash/wet it. Went through all that malarkey this morning - not realising I was going to do this! Cut it dry, cut it quickly, used cheap crappy scissors.

My hair was too long/frazzled/growing in a new colour so not much to lose really.

Job done!

If I were 18 I might look a bit Suzi Quattro/Edgy Rock Chick. As it is, my look is more Post Menopausal//Hair Chewed by Rats - but IT WILL DO.

Don't they say there is only a few weeks between a bad haircut and an okay one?!

Lots and lots of hair to vacuum up nowGrin

I forgot to add, the scissors were so blunt that part way through chopping my hair, the scissors gave up. I really did hack it off

unlikelytobe · 25/10/2020 15:59

When I saw the title I thought you might be a woman on the edge of a nervous breakdown! Generally, hacking one's hair off is not a good sign but in these unusual times it's completely understandable. It will grow back.

I've been cutting my hair for years.

It's straight & usually to my shoulders.

I tie it into pigtails & cut.

Then get daughter to straighten if necessary!

Have occasionally cut above the tie rather than below!Blush

I'm not sure that I could be paid enough to ever go into a hairdressers again!

A couple of months into lockdown I decided to take the clippers to my pixie cut. They don't have separate cutters for different lengths, a lever moves just the one.

I put it on the longest length, tried it on a bit, yep, that would be fine. Decided before I went upstairs to do it that I'd do DP's first, on the equivalent of no.3.

(You know what's coming, don't you!)

Headed off to the bathroom mirror, ran the clippers straight along the top from front to back. Without resetting them. It grew back Grin.

I usually have very short hair (number 5 on the back and sides and an inch or two on top all spikey). But since I was unable to get it cut during lockdown it was growing out and falling down into my glasses all the time.

Ended up shaving my head fully using a pair of dog grooming clippers. They were the only thing we could find online, all the human ones were sold out!

Cut my hair today for the second time. I tried the 'unicorn' as I think it's known from YouTube a few weeks ago, but I find it too layered so tried to then just do a straight trim. I put my hair into pigtails but thought I was supposed to cut it above the bobble not underneath so I have a feeling it's not too straight! It does feel so much better now a few inches have come off, and no one's gets to see me at the moment anyway! I've bought some £7 scissors off Amazon and think they seem really good

@raddledoldmisanthropist

Buy an electric razor and shave it short- it's great.
Grin I bought a set of clippers, set them to Grade 1, handed them to a friend & let her get on with it.

I love the furry feeling after a good shave!

cantdothisnow1 · 25/10/2020 16:56

Yes I've done this too recently. Only I'd had a bottle of wine first. Went from long down my back to short. Now wearing a hat permanently. Too embarrassed to go to hair dressers to fix!

Cyw2018 · 25/10/2020 16:59

I 'hacked' mine off in march just before lockdown as it was annoying me how long it took to wash it at work after a 12 hour shift (frontline nhs).

I cut it wet but underestimated how much longer it was wet than dry, and could only just tie it back afterwards...oops!

It's a lovely length now though!

Yep, DD doesn't stop messaging with my hair until about 3 days later.

NetflixWatcher · 25/10/2020 17:06

I had a horrible ex who told me I wasnt allowed to have short hair so when I finally got rid of him I cut my long hair which was half way down my back, into a short pixie cut. Hacked it all of. 8 years later I still have it short. I'm sure it looks absolutely fine OP x

After far too many shit haircuts I started cutting my own some years ago. I used any sharp scissors and a couple of mirrors.

I have a collection of hairdressing scissors, my others old thinning scissors, some Crea clips, and some of those really tiny rubber bands that you see used on the You Tube videos. One thing I don't have that I intend to get are hair clippers.

I also started doing my own colour, not too difficult as I had a background in hair related stuff. If you know how colours work it is a big help. I have never had a disaster but had some awful experiences in expensive salons.

SlopesOff · 25/10/2020 17:50

mother's not others

meow1989 · 25/10/2020 18:57

I've done this a few times i lockdown... I may have an almost mullet on one side now 😳

Casschops · 25/10/2020 19:06

I gave myself an undercut all down one side in April. Now it looks like a have two haircuts on one head!

RippleEffects · 25/10/2020 19:14

If you want to try another easy method I've tried various but I currently use the unicorn method to get a layered look. You brush it all into a ponytail on your forehead and cut at a diagonal.

You need it just slightly damp and need to make sure its going into the bobble evenly.

I dip the end of the ponytail in the sink before the final cut so its fairly straight then do a little cutting in so it softens the edge.

I do it on my DD's hair too as she has no patience for a hairdresser and its really quick.

JoanWilderbeast · 25/10/2020 19:34

I hear you. Watched loads of Makeover Guy videos on YouTube and though the positive vs negative outcomes are up to you to decide.. It helped me press the f*ck it button and my local hairdresser (JJ's Barnet) came up trumps with a longer at the front short at the back do that works for me ;)

foxtiger · 26/10/2020 15:40

YANBU, on two counts - to cut your own hair and to have a down-to-earth attitude about hair, that any cut you don't like will grow out eventually.

I cut my own hair a lot. Occasionally it doesn't turn out quite how I wanted it, but so what? It's not a vital organ or anything. It always looks better (to me) than when hairdressers cut it, because they don't listen to me about wanting layers and wanting to encourage the curl.

This is my attitude too - what the hell, I sayGrin
