To ask if breast cancer

MiaMarshmallows · 24/10/2020 17:54

is common in someone of 35 years old? Not me. Worried about a relative who has been referred. Already has other health issues unrelated to the breast/cancer so am concerned and worry how she will cope if she also has cancer :(

Depending on the source, 4-7% of breast cancers are in the under 40s

I'll see if I can find any more stats, but I'm not sure how far it'll help. Because it can happen in young women, and knowing the population rates isn't really going to tell you much about the individual.

A different stat to the one you asked for is that estimated 90% or more of those (any age) referred under the 2 week rule get an all-clear.

If common = more than 1% of all cases, then yes.
If common = at least 10% of all cases, then no.
Most lumps in women under 40 are benign.

Referral for breast lumps is a good thing as she will go to a specialist clinic for assessment. I hope she can get a reassuring answer but if it is something more serious she will be in the right place with the right team. It's a worrying time OP, I hope you're okay. Thanks xx

Not very common but does happen.

MiaMarshmallows · 24/10/2020 19:06

It's not a lump but a constant discharge.

I didn't know the stats were that low. I have known a few who have had breast cancer in their thirties. Sadly I think it is becoming more common in younger women.
Thanks for the kind thoughts and information.
