Will people be trick or treating this year?

I'm not a parent so I don't know what people are planning for this year. I love it when the trick or treaters knock on the door and enjoy pumpkin carving and making something spooky for my front window. I'll still do a display but I don't know whether to get some Halloween sweets in or not. We live in a tier 1 area but I realise people will still be anxious about mixing. I also realise this question anticipates some psychic ability but parents of MN what are your chances of going trick or treating?

Dd has to do a Halloween window display for a homework, which will be staying up.

And I am old and used to go Halloween rhyming when decorating for Halloween wasn’t really a thing, apart from a turnip lantern. There are still plenty of people who don’t decorate for Halloween because they don’t have kids but are, under normal circumstances, happy to open the door to trick or treaters.

We used to have neighbours who always decorated for Halloween but pretended they weren’t in when anyone knocked. Which was kind of mean but this year if anyone does let their kids do it, they shouldn’t be surprised if people aren’t doing it, even if they have their house decorated.

PracticingPerson · 24/10/2020 12:54

Why can 6 people from 2 households meet at the park but not walk round a street together and pick something up from outside a house.

Covid conversations keep reminding me of that saying 'there's none so blind as them that will not see'

ImMoana · 24/10/2020 12:57

No we won’t be doing it this year. Not going to put sweets put either.

Crystal90567 · 24/10/2020 13:01

We're doing a pumpkin hunt. I'm giving my little ones 5p for each pumpkin they see.
We're counting them.
100 = £5
200 = £10
Wont work if people don't decorate/ put pumpkins out!

Womencanlift · 24/10/2020 13:03

All of you that are saying you will put a bowl of sweets out do you not worry about the multiple (potential non sanitised) hands touching it. Sorry not for me and I am in the more relaxed side of restrictions in most circumstances

Ginfordinner · 24/10/2020 13:07

Tier 3 here, so no T or T happening

DumplingsAndStew · 24/10/2020 13:18

Nope, not here. I love Halloween, its one of my favourite nights, but its just not worth the risk. Won't be going out, won't be decorating and won't be answering the door Sad

DominaShantotto · 24/10/2020 13:20

I'll get some haribo packets in in case any kids knock. Up to parents if they want to sterilise the packets or whatever else. Don't think we'll get many (we rarely do where we are anyway to be honest) but there's bound to be some.

lockeddownandcrazy · 24/10/2020 13:24

No, wont be sending kids out to do begging with menaces.

Tricerapops · 24/10/2020 13:31

Yes, we will be. We're in Scotland and the plan in our small estate is for the kids to meet at the park (in the estate) and the go round as a "costume parade" and those who want to are leaving sweets out/handing bags of sweets over or similar.

CucumberFacePot · 24/10/2020 13:31

No, not this year. We love Halloween, have give trick or treating for the last few years and usually decorate the house to welcome the hoards of trick or treaters in our area. I won't be decorating at all as I suspect sone people will still be about and I don't want to cause any confusion. It'll be a cosy movie night in with lots of snacks this year for us.

DumplingsAndStew · 24/10/2020 13:40

@lockeddownandcrazy

No, wont be sending kids out to do begging with menaces.
Hmm
ParadiseLaundry · 24/10/2020 13:48

@surprisebabyshower I totally agree with you.

'I remember someone on here in April claiming milk and toilet roll aren't essential.
'

I would have thought you were exaggerating if I hadn't seen that thread with my own eyes! That, without a doubt, is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen on mumsnet.

LadyofMisrule · 24/10/2020 13:49

We're not going out, and won't be decorating the house so that no-one knocks here. The children have planned to trick or treat inside the house instead. They are going to knock on all the doors inside the house and collect sweets at each one.

Quizeerascal · 24/10/2020 13:50

One of the few perks of 2020, no halloween (or less halloween anyway)Grin

AlexaShutUp · 24/10/2020 13:51

I love Halloween, but we won't be decorating or opening the door this year. DD is too old for it anyway, but I wouldn't have taken her in the current climate. It's an unnecessary risk.

nosswith · 24/10/2020 13:53

Please don't. I would just ask you to leave if you called at my door, but I can imagine others would be hostile. Decorate or have pumpkin soup perhaps, but nothing else.

Mamimawr · 24/10/2020 13:57

No, we're under lockdown in Wales.

Blueroses99 · 24/10/2020 14:00

My street are doing a scavenger hunt with Halloween decorations in front windows and driveways that can be seen from the pavement. No need to touch anything and parents are giving their own kids treats. There are free scavenger hunt sheets online.

Willyoujustbequiet · 24/10/2020 14:05

No definitely not. We are tipping into tier 3. I won't do anything that increases the risk and that includes leaving sweets outside.

I will be decorating for my kids and apple dooking etc.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/10/2020 14:06

Nothing like a food delivery. The drivers here unload the groceries and leave more than 2m away from the door and leave whilst you bring in.

We can an enormous amount of calls and there’s no way they will be 2m away and no way of knowing if they are carrying the virus. No to mention larger groups would put us over the rule of six as how would they know how many were already in the household?

I hope it will be ok by next year as love Halloween but i hope parents don’t trick or treat and disappoint children when people don’t answer.

Justbeinghonestreally · 24/10/2020 14:07

We won’t be and I don’t see why people feel the need to find ways to work around it so they can do it. We need to accept 2020 is pretty much a write off not ‘my little Johnny won’t understand and will be so sad he can’t get his sweeties’.

ISeeTheLight · 24/10/2020 14:10

We are decorating but I'm going to put a sign up saying we are not taking part in trick or treating to help stop the spread of coronavirus. I'm in a tier 2 area expected to go to tier 3 soon.

Angel2702 · 24/10/2020 14:12

@Givemeabreak88

See I won’t be because of the pumpkin trail thing so how will you know which house is ok to knock on and which isn’t if some are putting up pumpkins for a pumpkin trail Confused
There are posters you can print off on the pumpkin trail page saying you are part of the pumpkin trail but won’t be handing out treats this year .
jazzandh · 24/10/2020 14:13

Where I am throughout the summer, people were putting their books and toys outside for kids to take "for free" .....yet the thought of taking a couple of wrapped sweets from a bowl is giving them the vapours!

The same adults that have been indoors, posing next to each other and taking selfies at the local pubs and restaurants.

They are also hosting playdates and sleepovers, and kids parties.

I actually can't really see that in a low risk area, it is a massive risk amongst small children.

Having said that, I will take my younger DS out for a walk around to look at the decorations, and we will not terrify anyone by knocking this year.

I will answer the door if anyone knocks and also leave a bowl of sweets outside.
