Is the stand up to cancer stat really true?

I remember when it used to be 1 in 4 of us will get cancer. Now the stand up to cancer stat is saying 1 in 2? I know lots of people are affected by cancer but is this really true? This is awful if so

I have not seen the SUTC ads but I am guessing they would be like the British Heart Foundation ads which tend to feature children with rare heart diseases who obvs need our support but clearly raise a lot more money than a fat, elderly smoker who would be a more typical heart patient - but not tempt many to reach for their wallets.

In reality we are most likely to be the elderly, unappealing looking patient no-one wants to make an ad about so charities have to raise funds in the way that works.

@ranoutofquinoaandprosecco I'm also a two year survivor! Best of luck!

Yes it's true but remember that they really are including everything they can in that stat! So it will not only be 80 year old men with prostate cancer but also all the skin cancers that could actually be left alone and not do you harm - I'm talking about the very slow growing plaques that won't spread anywhere but are removed anyway.

According to this, 28% of UK deaths are caused by cancer. I don’t know if that’s reassuring or not. It would be interesting to look into that in a bit more detail to see how many are in the very elderly, and how many are not. www.cancerresearchuk.org/health-professional/cancer-statistics/mortality#heading-Two

@EKGEMS same to you! It's all a bit surreal now isn't it!
My Mums contacted me today though to tell me one of her friends nieces has just been diagnosed with BC, she's also in her 40s like me. She asked if I would speak to her about chemo which I said of course I would.
