Posting in AIBU for traffic

As a foodbank volunteer could I please can anyone who can to donate to their local foodbank this weekend. Demand is huge at the moment and with more redundancies happening each week more and more people will be turning to a foodbank for help. It could be you needing their help in the future. The link below let’s you search for your local foodbank and see what they need the most.

Thank you

Bizarre that someone would refuse to donate to a Christian food bank. I’m guessing the people who use them really don’t care. They just want food. This is a situation where religion shouldn’t be an issue.

Alternista · 23/10/2020 23:07

I just don’t donate to religious charities any more if I can find an alternative that does the same good work, that’s all. It’s just personal preference, no need to snipe. If the only people doing something in an area are religious that’s a different thing. I don’t think Fare Share are religious, so I’ve given to them in the past, but I could be wrong. It’s been a while so this thread was a good prompt for me. Just wondering aloud really.

It’s not bizarre at all, lots of people have concerns dating back to at least the ‘Shoe Box Appeal’
Adding the link pp did is hardly a bad thing is it? Just gives options. It’s still giving.

Fwiw, I spent about 10 hours last week sorting out donations from a school harvest festival (checking dates and, yes, quite a lot of donations were out of date) and making up food parcels for the charity's families. We had loads of baked beans, tinned soup and dried pasta - needed more tinned meat (say Spam, meatballs, chicken in gravy, ham etc), breakfast cereal/bars, UHT milk, fruit juice, tinned puddings.

ScrumptiousBears · 23/10/2020 23:47

Our local food bank don't update the website with what they need at any one point just a list of standard stuff. I never really know what to get. Often I'll get treats as well as we all need a treat don't we.

Eaumyword · 23/10/2020 23:48

Donated. It's a great cause and I try to give whenever I can. I like to pop little treats like chocolate selection boxes in too - these are things people can't afford, but I'd like to think can feel like a little hug from a stranger.

surprisebabyshower · 23/10/2020 23:58

@Badgerbadger22 drumchapel food bank could do with your help for sure

surprisebabyshower · 24/10/2020 00:00

@ScrumptiousBears things like tea bags, coffee, sugar, toiletries, sanitary items & nappies are often forgotten about.

@kowari

I wish my local Aldi had a drop off point, that's where I do my weekly shop. I do donate when I go to Tesco but you don't get as much for the money.
You can always buy stuff in Aldi and put it in the collection point at Tesco.
BackforGood · 24/10/2020 00:25

Or, for those who find it difficult to get to a drop off point, or who normally shop in a supermarket that doesn't have one, or order on-line, you can set up a standing order to the Trussell Trust.
Even if it is only £5 a month - the regular giving is really helpful (add Gift Aid if you can).
Imagine what a difference it would make if everyone were able to send even a small amount like that. Smile

Oranges555 · 24/10/2020 06:59

Donated. Don’t know what it is but since being a mother myself I just can’t imagine families going without

kowari · 24/10/2020 07:12

You can always buy stuff in Aldi and put it in the collection point at Tesco. I don't think you are meant to. I think Tesco do a foodbank donation top up thing which may make up for their food costing more.

Ragwort · 24/10/2020 07:23

You can put donations from any shop into a supermarket collection point - I've picked up Fortnum and Mason stuff from the collection point in our local Morrisons Grin.

And agree with other posters, please check with your local Food Bank what they actually need - the one I volunteer with is overwhelmed with donations at the moment and we are running out of storage space (a nice problem to have).

Many towns have independent food banks, not part of Trussel Trust.

pinkstripeycat · 24/10/2020 07:29

During lockdown I telephoned my local food bank and left A few voicemails asking when I could drop food off. Was planning on getting them a load of what they’d asked for on a leaflet someone gave me. Never heard a thing from them again

MsSquiz · 24/10/2020 07:39

Thank you to those PPs who mentioned donating their Tesco vouchers. I didn't know that was a thing, so have just gone on to donate.

Our local food bank was recently the charity donated to by NUFC fans who refused to pay to watch the match on PPV, so they donated the £15 to the West End Food bank.

We also usually do the reverse advent calendar type thing in December, but will be doing it earlier this month

redcarbluecar · 24/10/2020 07:46

Thanks for the link OP; a good and important cause.

Parker231 · 24/10/2020 07:48

We do collections at work each Friday - “bring a tin to work day” and at the gym they collect donations of toiletries.

As some of the previous posters have said, knowing what your local foodbank needs is important. Storage is a problem and too many jars of pasta sauce are difficult to store when your really short of tinned fruit or breakfast cereal.

@Ireallywantsomechips

Not all are listed as the two I'm associated with aren't on that list, on the trussell trust ones are - try google

kowari · 24/10/2020 08:09

Ours only have pasta on the don't want list for October, that could mean they are low on most foods? Tesco have sponge puddings for a clubcard price at the moment so I'll pick up some of those (on the wanted list).

RoseCider · 24/10/2020 08:16

The Trussell Trust in my area is shocking. Many local Foodbanks/Larders have now started up which people don’t need to beg for a referral for and are treated with dignity when they arrive. They also choose what type of foods they would like instead of being handed a bag of food picked for them.

Food banks are asked to make a contribution of £1,500 during the first year of the food bank development and £360 each consecutive year. This contribution helps towards the costs of delivering the many services to food banks.

The bold is what you have to pay to the Trussell Trust to start a foodbank and run it under their name. I personally have no time for them and prefer to support local foodbanks.

Ragwort · 24/10/2020 08:22

I am involved in a local Food Bank ... Trussel actually approached us to ask us to join them, we did look into it but prefer to remain independent. I know Trussel do a good job, but they have a lot of rules and regulations and you have to follow their strict guidelines. As an independent FB we can help people directly and sometimes that might mean supplying a hot meal to someone living on the streets. We not insist on a referral, we would never turn anyone away. Of course we do get a few who become over reliant on the FB but we get to know those people and help support them as much as possible by involving other agencies (where appropriate).

NightOwl19 · 24/10/2020 08:23

After reading this thread I've been online and checked what my local are in short supply of and going to make a donation today. Thank you OP Thanks

Have donated online as I’m allll the way down in Cornwall Flowers thank you.

RoseCider · 24/10/2020 09:12

As an independent FB we can help people directly and sometimes that might mean supplying a hot meal to someone living on the streets.

This is exactly why we remain independent. We also offer a hot freshly cooked meal when people come to choose their shopping as well as fresh packaged labelled ready meals to take away.
