Primary school meals

Should be hot dinners during the winter.

My DC(6) is in year1 at a school with a diverse intake and an above average % of children eligible for free school meals. Although in reception,y1&2 all the kids are offered free school meals anyway.

At the moment they are provided with a ham or cheese roll, biscuit and a slice of apple. Sometimes there are carrot sticks too. That seems fine for the summer, if a bit boring. But "in my day!" there was always a hot meal option. Especially important for the kids who may not get one at home.
Even with c19 many establishments and institutions are able to run a kitchen serving hot meals.

What's happening re:food at your DC's school at the moment?

My daughters school are still doing hot meals. One meat, one veggie option and jacket potatoes each day. Offered to all years. We are also quite high on the % of free school meals.

The homemade meals from the canteen are one of the things that swayed me to chose the school.

Hot meals are available for all who want them at the primary school, we order at the start of the week to say which of the choices we want. Secondary are doing a reduced menu as they have set up different outlets so bubbles don't mix in the dining hall.

No ours aren’t (juniors and secondary) due to covid.

I’m a lunch time supervisor our school offers 2 hot choices and 1 sandwich option each day. Children are eating it in classroom no issues. We did spend a few days tweaking the process but it’s all working smoothly. We are now at the point were 2 year groups use the hall (1st & last sitting).

That sounds really good @IggyAce

I understand it's tricky what with Covid. But loads of places are adapting and managing, even if it's not every day or whatever. I don't see why my DC's school haven't given it a go. I did send an email to ask what the reason was and what they had planned for next term but no response yet.

My children's school is providing a limited menu as the children are having lunch in their classrooms from a trolley. We can choose from a ham/cheese/tuna baguette, a jacket potato with tuna/beans/cheese or a rotating pasta dish.

My son's primary are doing hot meals as normal. They are a 1 form entry though and juniors are taking their lunches back to the classroom so this probably makes it easier.

The secondary I work in are doing packed lunch bags only. Not ideal but in order to keep year group bubbles separate, lunch is served in several areas such as the hall and sports hall. It simply isn't feasible to serve hot food in these areas. Not ideal but not much we can do. Most kids are bringing their own lunch in.
