Blue mould with furry bits on my DD’s room

I’ve just discovered this. All over the lower part of the external wall. We just moved in two weeks ago.
She has respiratory issues.
I’m freaking out.
Do any of you have any ideas what I can do?

Are you renting?

Try cleaning it off with a bleach solution/bleach spray
Contact the landlord

FlitterMouse · 22/10/2020 18:26

Is it on the inside or outside. Can you post a picture.

Krazynights34 · 22/10/2020 18:27

No we bought it!
It’s an old bungalow with 1980s wallpaper- I’m desperately trying to get the wallpaper off

It’s on the inside

Check the home report as any issues with mould should've been highlighted

RunBackwards · 22/10/2020 18:28

Wipe it off with bleach. Make sure the room is well ventilated. Consider a dehumidifier.

Is it a ground floor room? If not it's most likely to be caused by condensation, nothing the landlord can do other than improve ventilation.

dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 18:29

There is no landlord

RunBackwards · 22/10/2020 18:30

Ah it is a ground floor room, that's not good news. Did you have a survey? If damp is rising from the ground, that's a problem and you'll need a builder I'm afraid.

CecilyP · 22/10/2020 18:30

Sounds like condensation and you can clean it off with mould remover. Could be caused by lack of ventilation or there could be water coming in from somewhere.

Metroland · 22/10/2020 18:31

Try this as a starting point. Much better than anything, including bleach.

CecilyP · 22/10/2020 18:32

It is unlikely to be rising damp. I have had that in 2 homes and it is completely clean- no mould.

FlitterMouse · 22/10/2020 18:35

Have you been using a wallpaper steamer, is there any ventilation and heating on in that room. Can you look outside to see if any water is getting in.

applesandpears33 · 22/10/2020 18:40

Try not to put any furniture up against the external wall. We get condensation damp in our house and it is always worse behind furniture. I think it is because it prevents the air from circulating. We've now got a dehumidifier to help with the problem.

mongoosebaby · 22/10/2020 18:40

Are your gutters overflowing in the rain? This can cause all sorts of damp issues but is an easy fix so worth checking first

iMatter · 22/10/2020 18:47

Check your survey to see what it says

chickenyhead · 22/10/2020 18:50

At my last house, an old thick walled one, we would get this in the winter months. Upstairs or down.

The only way I found to prevent it, was to move any furniture away from external walls. It stopped happening then.

Krazynights34 · 22/10/2020 18:52

I can’t seem to include a picture

The pic is there. Does the wall feel wet and cold.

boredwithmylastusername · 22/10/2020 18:56

Have a look at what is on the outside of this wall , as it's low it could be rising damp but look to see what's causing this , broken drain ? Some earth or paving higher than the damp course ? Solving the cause is the most important part ,

Krazynights34 · 22/10/2020 18:58

It looks like rising damp to me! But I know nothing.
We didn’t do a survey (the shame I feel now!!)

OP posts:
Krazynights34 · 22/10/2020 18:58

The wallpaper was damp

OP posts:
Krazynights34 · 22/10/2020 18:59

I bet it’s caused by some structural issues

Bvop · 22/10/2020 19:01

Is there a blocked drain the other side of the external wall? It can happen at this time
Of year with leaves blocking things.
