Help! Crittal? French door?

Hi,

Please give me advice. Doing rear extension , the standard open plan kitchen and sitting area.

Crittal black rear doors? Worried that it’s “trendy” and will date. Also black may darken the room and may affect my choices of interiors. Was planning to have a “light country design” of creams and greens etc.

OR

Classic Georgian looking french doors. Bit boring.? Perhaps dated also?

Any advice appreciated, thanks

I am having the same debate re our new house. We love the crittal doors but are worried they’ll look dated in a few months

Sorry no advice!! Grin

What period is the house?

I think that the Georgian style looks a bit naff on more modern houses. But I'm not keen on the black ones either, and think that they will date.

1920s, so crittal is appropriate. However rest of windows are white with Georgian bars.

Did you mean French windows? I have never heard of French doors.

Sonders · 22/10/2020 15:39

I would stick to the era of the house, but crittal is a very expensive commitment if you're not even sold on the style before they go in! Sounds like you need to spend some time Pinteresting until you find a style you love :)

Greensippycup · 22/10/2020 15:44

I do like both, but they just have different vibes. Pinterest has ruined me! So much choice!

If the house was built with Georgian style windows in the 1920s, Georgian style french doors will always look classic and never date. If you have unity in the architectural style, it's easy to pull off a contrast in a different interior design style.

If you aren't even sure of your interior styles yet, I wouldn't go for Crittal. Particularly, if you are thinking of a country style. Nothing looks worse than mish mash of styles unless you are very creative and able to get the balance just right.

I live in a 1930s property with original Crittal windows, not sure how they'd become dated?! I realise they're fashionable at the moment, but they're also classic!

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 22/10/2020 16:21

What is your AIBU question?

Fluffybutter · 22/10/2020 16:36

I don’t really like the Crittal doors so would be French for me

kezziethecat · 22/10/2020 16:47

I love the Crittal style and if money was no object I would go for them. Are they significantly more expensive than french? I think both would go with your house from your description.

We have bronze windows in our new build which look fabulous.
I've colour matched the refurbished Criterall doors/windows in the adjoining garage to match using the RAL number.

Looks good in effectively a dark brown.

I don't think they will date.

Greensippycup · 22/10/2020 18:52

Has anyone had experience of black crittall with light coloured interiors?

If the rest of the windows are white with Georgian bars, I'd have the French doors the same.

It will make it seem more sort of unified, if that makes sense.

SorrelForbes · 23/10/2020 11:32

We've got these. They're not Crittal but give a similar effect. Our kitchen is painted white
