Am I the only person who thinks parents should feed their kids outside of school?

Obviously it goes without saying I don't want any child to go hungry. But. Am I the only person who thinks parents should feed their kids outside of school?

Just that really.. it's free school dinners. Not free lunch all year round.

I don't understand why people think the tax payer should be paying even more? Maybe, if you can't afford to cover the basics (food and clothing) you should think twice before having a child?

Or should we extend free school dinners, to cover all the food a child needs inside and outside of school ?

I'm not tarring everyone with the same brush but I know people who rely on free school dinners. But have sky tv, expensive mobile contracts etc

OP, it really doesn't matter what parents should or shouldn't do.

The meals are for the children not the parents.

Even if you cynically assume that the parents of every child in receipt of school meals is a feckless lay about, their children still need food all year round.

The cost of providing a meal is cheap compared to the societal cost of children going hungry.

Tory or journalist or Laura Kuensberg in disguise?

HOkieCOkie · 22/10/2020 20:35

I agree with you. I’m sure all these starving children’s parents, smoke and drink alcohol and have the latest Xbox/smart tv/sky

Oh fuck them then, let their helpless kids starve. Who cares?

Fuck the hungry kids then. They shouldn’t have been so careless as to have been born to such selfish, feckless parents.

And even if that is the case in the minority of cases of children going without food is it really right to punish children further for their parents behaviour?
HOkieCOkie · 22/10/2020 20:40

My point is, cut back on those expenses and buy food instead.

We know what your point is. But it doesn’t change the fact that your wanting to punish children for their parents decisions
HOkieCOkie · 22/10/2020 20:42

I’m not at all actually I feel very sorry for children in these situations.

Giving the benefit of the doubt that this isn't a vile troll. I had none of these expenses and I had no money with 2 children to look after. My "DH" fucked off when I became ill and kindly left us in a load of debt. I had cut back each and every expense I could and still had nothing. I actually don't know why I try and explain myself to people like you.

Oh! You’ve solved it! Well done you! All those hungry kids are no longer hungry, their parents have realised the error of their ways.

Your Nobel prize will be delivered to you any day now.

CherryCocktails · 22/10/2020 20:51

Wouldn't starving your children every weekend and holidays fall under the child services category at neglect? ,🤨

You'd think so, but many people don't seem to realise how high the threshold for intervention is. Even when parents ask for it!

Especially when it's families going hungry through poverty rather than abuse.

And if they've cut back on everything they can and they still can't afford the extra costs?
Namenic · 22/10/2020 20:54

I don’t think it would be that bad to have a standard national school uniform (or variants of). Kids can get 2 per year.

Something simple like cheese sandwich and apples and bananas wouldn’t be too bad. Food would need to be booked in advance to prevent wastage and sanctions for those playing/misusing food. It’s not kids fault they don’t have enough food.

Probably but have you any idea just how high (low?) the threshold is for any action on neglect? Feeding the kids is far cheaper than any other intervention that might be made.
CakeRequired · 22/10/2020 20:55

It's necessary because some 'adults' abuse their own children and starve them. That's sometimes the kids only meal.

Id rather look at how we can legally sterilise such 'people' than take away free school meals. I struggle to call them people to be honest, people who have the capability of deliberately starving their own children aren't human in my eyes.

Nancydowns · 22/10/2020 20:55

If the majority of low income families can't afford to feed their kids outside of term time, then benefits (both in and out of work) and minium wage is too low. We don't need to give kids free school meals, we need to up the minium wage, get rid of zero hour contracts, get rid of benefit sanctions, make disability benefits fairer and more acsessible, and make sure in and out of work benefits are in line with the cost of living.

This idea that people are spending money on sky TV instead of food is ignorant and insulting to families living on the breadline.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 22/10/2020 20:57

@Rubixed some people aren't interested in the actual reality of poverty. Its far easier to pretend we are all feckless parents starving our kids whilst living the high life.

Facelikearustytractor · 22/10/2020 20:57

I find it really hard to believe that you systematically go round people's houses who have FSM and collect data on who has an expensive phone contract, flat screen TV (you can get them second hand or get a hand me down - who knew!) and do you sit in their recycling bin counting their beer bottles?

If you are going to start a thread, might be an idea to be actually informed about what you are commenting on. Just an idea.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 22/10/2020 20:59

Do non flat screen TVs actually exist anymore?

malificent7 · 22/10/2020 21:00

Sterilising now are we,?
What if you are neglectful or abusive but still can't afford to eat?

CherryPavlova · 22/10/2020 21:01

CakeRequired. Im guessing you voted Brexit then and think Priti Patel is a force for good? Appalling far right I'll informed attitude.

Makes me laugh when people froth over people buying ‘flat screen TV’s’, like it’s 2005 or something. All TV’s are flat screen now!
