There's a drive in cinema nearby that on Halloween is showing my favourite Halloween movie (Hocus Pocus).
Unfortunately because half of the stadium is in Wales and half in England it looks like it'll be cancelled because the toilet facilities will be in Wales so the English can't use them.
The screen will be in Wales and so they are saying the English can't watch it and the Welsh can't access it because the road leading to the stadium is in England and there's no road from Wales to get there.

You just can't make this up. Unless the organisers move the event, which they've got a limited time to do so, then the event will be cancelled.

So frustrating! There's not many events you can go to anyway so this was something I was looking forward to. Ugh!

Surely the stadium has an address - so does that address say England or Wales?

Precisely. It will be deemed to have a postcode and a council authority - for regulatory and tax purposes. Where do they pay council tax?

killerofmen · 22/10/2020 11:25

I understand that's frustrating because Hocus Pocus is a brilliant film.

That said, Wales is under national lockdown from Friday so the stadium is obliged to comply with the law.

ddl1 · 22/10/2020 11:25

Sorry - YANBU and I really do sympathize with your disappointment, but I couldn't help giggling at:

Unfortunately because half of the stadium is in Wales and half in England it looks like it'll be cancelled because the toilet facilities will be in Wales so the English can't use them.

Sounds like this in itself could be the subject of a comedy film sometime in the future when our memories of this time have faded somewhat and become less bitter. 'The Halloween Ghost-Guards of the Welsh Loos', or something like that.

emmathedilemma · 22/10/2020 11:27

That is ridiculous! Some of our local attractions have put portaloos in because indoor toilet facilities are closed, or to add capacity but they certainly aren't being cleaned after every person, i'm fairly sure most public toilets aren't! They've been well monitored and cleaned round here but not after each person.
I went to a drive in cinema and we were parked near the portaloos and barely anyone used them all evening.

foilflower · 22/10/2020 11:30

@BelsizeNameChange

Very annoying (also hilarious, sorry).

Why can the Welsh not go? Are they not allowed to drive through England and back into Wales? There’s somewhere we’ve gone on holiday near Haye On Wye where the road would around between England and Wales, I’m wondering how people there would get to the local shop if they weren’t allowed to cross the border.

Wales will be in a lockdown from tomorrow evening for two weeks. Shops and restaurants shut, travel only for essential reasons.
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/10/2020 11:33

This is so ridiculous I can believe it.

(I've lived near a UN patrolled contested border. Very peaceful the majority of the time. But ridiculous stuff does happen)

Comefromaway · 22/10/2020 11:35

Storyhouse organise lots of external/outdoor events as well as stuff in their own arts centre. Ds went to their Grosvenor Park Shakespeare in August.

I've just had a look at the map and although their official address is Chester as that is where the offices are located, the majority of the actual stadium and car park areas are inside the Welsh border. The English bit is really small.

GabsAlot · 22/10/2020 11:44

its ridiculous but not alot you can do

what stadium is it my dh is from n. wales

bettybyebye · 22/10/2020 12:19

@Gabsalot It’s the Chester city football ground on Bumpers lane

Regardless, I agree with OP's original point which is the sheer disappointment of having to keep cancelling things. Not being able to have things to look forward to is really rubbish.

GabsAlot · 22/10/2020 12:47
@Gabsalot It’s the Chester city football ground on Bumpers lane
thanks of course it is-my dh jokes about it all the time

Heyahun · 22/10/2020 12:53

Meh - everything booked has a chance of being cancelled this year - probably should just get used to it unfortunately

I was looking forward to going to my friends for a Halloween party (just 6 of us) tier 2 now so that’s cancelled too sadly!

There’s always next year

pussycatinboots · 22/10/2020 13:16

I knew it was Chester when I read your OP.

The stadium is mostly in Wales and the Car Park is mostly in England (getting it through Planning was a right PITA). England did the Building Regs on the Stadium as more of the area of the application (which included the car park) was in England.🤷🏻‍♀️

ButtWormHole · 22/10/2020 13:25

OP please make sure you treat yourself to the nicest snacks at the cinema today!

nosswith · 22/10/2020 13:36

Worse things have happened at Chester FC.

Glad you have got to see the film after all.

PopcornPugs · 22/10/2020 14:15

It’s pretty frustrating living this close to the border at the moment, especially as neither government seemed to have given the situation any thought at all

TrickorTreacle · 22/10/2020 14:47

The only person who would have placed a stadium on a border is a bureaucrat. The red tape is a dream come true for the local pen-pushers, on both sides of the border!

ChippyTea16 · 22/10/2020 14:51

That’s really shit to have it cancelled. Can you re-create it at home somehow? Using a projector or something? Or decorate your living room, get loads of cinema snacks/takeaway/wine and make an event of it at home?

howaboutchocolate · 22/10/2020 15:10

Wales will be in a lockdown from tomorrow evening for two weeks. Shops and restaurants shut, travel only for essential reasons.

well yes, but the point was that some people live in places where the roads criss cross the border. they can't exactly drive off the road and across fields in order to stay on the correct side of the border.

CovidNightmare · 22/10/2020 15:22

The event crosses two areas with different levels of restrictions so they cancel based on the area with the highest restrictions. It is irrelevant it is England/Wales, it could have been Manchester and a surrounding area.

Of course it is disappointing for you, but don't see the problem with the decision making.

blue25 · 22/10/2020 15:23

What a ridiculous reason-so petty!

bettybyebye · 23/10/2020 14:10

OP have you seen it’s going ahead now?! 😀 they have hired portaloos and all cars will be on the English side of the car park...glad to see common sense has prevailed!
