Light hearted one. I think. Confused

The other day MIL was round she saw a table online and showed me and said did I want it and said how much, I said no as it didn’t suit my house. She then said oh I’ve got a table we can swap. I said I wasn’t sure if I could afford it. (Because times are hard let’s be honest)
She literally put me on the spot. Told me to hurry up and decide as it was about it go. I said yes as I felt anxious being put on the spot like that. Sent her £20 for her then to tell me the table she’s giving me has been eaten by her dogs and needs sanding down. Hmm
Basically I’ve spent £20 for her to have a new table while I get a half destroyed table I didn’t need. AIBU for being a bit like wtf? 😳 Feel like I’ve been done over a bit wasnt until afterwards I reliezed I’ve effectively paid for her to have a new table and I’ll probably have a table that will have to be binned.

“Hi MIL. I’ve been thinking. I like my table and don’t have time to sand yours down after it’s been chewed. Obviously I’ve paid for your new one so please just call it a Christmas present and dispose of your old one as you think best.”

^^

Good grief Op. Just tell her you want your £20 back.

Shoxfordian · 21/10/2020 14:01

I think you need to learn how to say no

Redred2429 · 21/10/2020 14:02

I agree op decline the table and tell her the table is her xmas

Confused? Are there 3 tables?

If so, keep yours and MiL has 2

I find myself irrationality annoyed at this whole situation. At your MIL for being such a cheeky cow and at you for allowing it. She's basically decided she wants a new table but you're going to buy it for her, plus get rid of her tatty not fit for purpose one for her. How the hell it came to this I don't know. When it arrives just say you don't want the tatty table and it's actually saved you some Christmas shopping so it's worked out rather well. Don't let her think she's got one over on you.

Do you have a house full of furniture you done want because you can’t say no to people?

You don’t have to be rude, just ‘no thanks’, will do.

Butterymuffin · 22/10/2020 08:21

Yes, the 'let's make the table your Christmas present' is the best fix now.
