I booked a week in advance, plenty of availability, and had test this week. The optician said that they were expecting things to get very quiet as Christmas approaches.

I booked mine almost a month in advance and it was still cancelled!

I had a test in May - my regular optician was closed, so I had to use specsavers who were open for emergency appointments all through lockdown as far as I'm aware.
My regular optician opened a while ago - june or July I think.

Probably worth googling your regular optician or opticians in your area rather than asking here.

How far is it for you to drive to Barnard Castle?

I couldn't get into my usual place (Boots opticians) till December. Got a test at Specsavers instead though, no problem.

I can vouch for the same, around here. Specsavers have been very good, going the extra mile. I'm a bit disappointed with Boots, tbh.

Me and both DCs have had our eyes tested recently. 2 week wait for the test (and DD2 then needed to wait a further 1.5wks for a second test) and glasses took another 2 weeks after that, so no as quick as before but not awful. We also use Specsavers and were really happy with the in-store service.
DD2 has been referred to see a specialist at the hospital, and we have been warned there is quite a backlog for that however.
