AIBU or was the Superdrug assistant out of order

So I have been feeling exhausted over the last two days.. my first thought was pregnancy as exhaustion was the first symptom I had very early on with my three children.

I ordered some tests on prime but being as impatient as I am I decided to go to my local small Superdrug, in my local small town where lots of people know lots of people.

Took the pack of tests to the counter and the assistant loudly announces 'Oh wow no adults are social distancing at the moment, we've sold loads of these today, but I guess there is nothing else to do right now'. I was a little shocked at the total lack of subtlety.

I know it's nothing to be embarrassed about but to me it's quite private and not something you want announcing for all to hear. I hate confrontation so didn't say much at time time but I now feel like complaining. I could see that the other shop assistant was equally as shocked as me.

AIBU to be really annoyed and a little upset or am I just being precious?

PS it was negative thankfully Grin

Yes she was out of order absolutely. What an idiot!

GoldfishParade · 20/10/2020 17:15

It's not great but it's hardly the outrage of the century

IMNOTSHOUTING · 20/10/2020 17:18

Yes it was massively inappropriate and unprofessional, was she a teenager or was this a fully grown adult?

TheNoodlesIncident · 20/10/2020 17:19

I think the other assistant will be suggesting a bit more training, even as a teenager I would never have made remarks like that in front of customers! Maybe she thought she was being amusing..? It's not offensive per se, but there's no need to draw attention to what customers are buying, is there?

pinkyredrose · 20/10/2020 17:20

She needs reporting. What if the person had buying a test had been assaulted? Besides she was announcing what you were buying for everyone to hear, would she do that with pile cream or whatever?

Cassilis · 20/10/2020 17:20

Reminds me of the last time I went to Superdrug and the assistants were calling the manager a fucking bitch whilst serving me. So unprofessional. I worked in Boots years ago and we would never have done that!

LittleRen · 20/10/2020 17:21

@IMNOTSHOUTING I'd say in her 40s

@GoldfishParade it's certainly not the outrage of the century I agree but I do think it's inappropriate. She doesn't know my circumstances and I don't think it's anyone else's business, that's all. In my opinion working somewhere like that you should be able to bite your tongue and not make a customer feel extremely uncomfortable.

@Cassilis I wish I'd have gone to Boots over the road.

I always find it strange when cashiers comment on someone buying a pregnancy test. Its really rude. I think would have said something.

sapnupuas · 20/10/2020 17:23

Which town was it?

This is 100% something my MIL would do!

ASandwichNamedKevin · 20/10/2020 17:25

It's not on, she has absolutely no idea of the circumstances behind the need for a pregnancy test, it could be a happy or not so happy situation.
It could be for you or someone else.
Someone desperately worried about affording a baby.
Someone testing after a miscarriage.
Someone desperately hoping it's positive.
Someone desperately hoping it's negative.

None are any of her business. I wonder if she makes comments on people buying condoms too?

LittleRen · 20/10/2020 17:30

@ASandwichNamedKevin I agree - my circumstances were pretty simple, if we had another child it'd be fine, not ideal with the chaos three already, but we'd be ok... but as soon as I walked out I put myself in the shoes of someone else... someone who has perhaps been having IVF and is desperate for a child, or someone who was worried about being pregnant, or as someone else said someone who was assaulted.

I'm glad to know the consensus is that I'm not over reacting, not sure if I will do anything with it but I do think the staff need basic training on things like this.

Completely unprofessional and inappropriate behaviour!

SpaceOP · 20/10/2020 17:33

It's inappropriate, yes. Weirdly common with shop assistants however.

I once had a word with an assistant in the underwear/pyjama department at M&S because she was taking the items off the hangers and bellowing out their sizes for the entire floor to hear before ringing them up. When it was my turn, I asked her why and she said she's always checking that the item and the hanger are the same because sometimes people pick up the wrong items. But she was completely gobsmacked when I suggested that perhaps doing this in her head rather than bellowing, "size 20" or "32FF" across the store while ringing up the purchases of elderly ladies was inappropriate.

I was 2 weeks shy of giving birth at that point and had genuinely just run out of fucks to give!! Grin

Very rude and unprofessional

BreatheAndFocus · 20/10/2020 17:49

Unprofessional. She shouldn’t be commenting on it at all. In fact, it’s not her job to comment on anyone’s shopping, pregnancy test or not.
