To be stressing about DD’s blood results.

Dd had a blood test last Thursday due to not gaining weight (she is tiny, went from 25th centile to off the bottom of the chart) and being extremely tired.

I had a message from the GP today to ask me to phone in, the GP isn’t back till tomorrow so have to wait until then for a proper consult.

The receptionist was able to tell me that Dd has elevated levels of something - she had her liver function, thyroid and iron levels checked. Should I be worrying?!

I am NOT going to Google, because I really will go bananas then I’m sure!

She’s 3.9 btw.

What did she have elevated levels of? High thyroid function can lead to weightloss but I'm pretty certain it's easily treatable.

TeddyIsaHe · 20/10/2020 15:57

The receptionist couldn’t see the full results - just that there was a note on file to say elevated levels and what they had tested for.

I’m sure it’s absolutely fine and nothing to worry about, but it’s hard to stop your brain running away with you.

She could be anemic (low iron) try not to worry

On the one occasion that I had a test with something that was very concerning, my actual Gp was out of the office when the results came in. So another GP was given the job of chasing me down, giving me the results and telling me that a consultant's appointment had been made me for me the next day.

Now, admittedly, it may be that DD has something serious but not time sensitive, but I'd be inclined to say that if the Gp has called you knowing she is unlikely to be around for most of the day, without asking another GP to follow up, whatever it is will be manageable. Most likely they will want to give her supplements or medication or send her to see a specialist.

I know it's hard not knowing.

If you are really desperate, you could ask the receptionist to ask another Gp to review the results and get back to you?

I'd be absolutely furious with that receptionist if I were the GP. How unprofessional to give you information that would clearly alarm you when they don't have the information to be accurate or reassure you or help in any way. Either they're emotionally ignorant beyond belief or they did it on purpose.

Maybe the OP asked her if she could see anything?

I would personally want to know and would ask them to read whatever was written even if I couldn’t speak to a doctors til the next day!

TeddyIsaHe · 20/10/2020 16:56

@SpaceOP thank you that is reassuring. And I agree if it was serious I’m sure they’d get someone to speak to me today.

In the receptionist’s defence I did ask her to read to me what was on file. I’d rather know something, even if it is stressful, than not.

It's the receptionist's job to tell you the doctor's comment and not the result. It you haven't been rung by a doctor it's not much to worry about.

TeddyIsaHe · 20/10/2020 17:09

I’ve got a phone consult with the dr tomorrow morning to discuss the results - the receptionist just told me what DD’s file said because I asked her to read it.

The receptionist would've been following the exact instructions on the task sent to her by the GP. When pressed for further info by the OP, the receptionist answered the query. It's ridiculous to suggest the receptionist was at fault.

Could be any number of things - the 'standard' blood test tests for more than just Hb count, Liver and Thyroid. And some are more concerning, some are less so.

Best to wait, hard though it is, and have a pen and paper handy for your telephone appointment.

Rotundandhappy · 20/10/2020 17:23

Don’t panic. It could be elevated levels showing hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), which is easily treatable abs nothing sinister.

thaegumathteth · 20/10/2020 20:47

Fwiw ds had an overactive thyroid as a baby. He grew out of it.

lovewatchingrainfall · 21/10/2020 15:57

Hope all went okay with the doctor and you got some answers

TeddyIsaHe · 21/10/2020 16:25

Well no answers really which is annoying! It was her kidneys that weren’t 100% but it wasn’t enough to be worrying, just slightly outside the normal range.

She’s got a full blood count & coeliac test next week now to try to get to the bottom of it all.
