AIBU to want to book a long haul holiday for December?

As the title really.
Just really want a holiday, kids want one ( trying not to say we need one lol). I want to book somewhere like Mexico or Jamaica. We can quarantine when we are back as both work from home. The only thing stopping me is insurance....as far as I have heard there are some insurance companies who are covering covid- but not covering if for example u get tested positive before u fly and then u can't get refunded.

Is anyone else booking a holiday in the near future? Anything you're concerned about?

For insurance try aviva, Staysure, battleface or surprisingly jet2 own insurance doesn't matter if your flights are not with them.

St Lucia is still on travel corridor, you need to pay for a test before you travel
So budget at least 180 pounds each for that.

Yes, yabu.

Yes, YABU. If you go, I hope you won’t be expecting help if you get stuck there or are left out of pocket.

Isn't that what insurance covers u for. That's why I would make sure I choose one which would cover me for that

If you’re really that naive then sure, go ahead 🤦‍♀️
mumwon · 20/10/2020 11:24

I think you are either naïve or unrealistic both about planning this & assuming that insurance will fully cover issues. Be aware that the law may change about you returning -not just in the area being off the list but how you may have to self isolate - you could land up in a hotel in UK for 2 weeks we simple don't know how this could change

CounsellorTroi · 20/10/2020 11:30

I think you are being unrealistic. We have an NZ holiday booked for Jan 2022 and we are not optimistic about that going ahead.

LagneyandCasey · 20/10/2020 11:31

I can't thinking anything worse. We're tentatively planning a trip in Europe late summer 2021 to give us something to look forward to, but won't actually book anything until the world is a lot more stable.

Sparklesocks · 20/10/2020 11:35

I’m not sure travel insurance is currently as rigorous as you imagine. From what I understand policies will cover if you or a travelling partner become ill with covid and can’t travel, but if the country goes into lockdown or travelling restrictions change then that’s seen as a ‘book at own risk’ type clause, as you knew it was possible when you book. Of course it varies from insurer to insurer, but you really need to understand the fine print before you go ahead.

Sugggs · 20/10/2020 11:36

TUI have cover with all their holidays if they are selling anything that suits?

If you can go I’d say do it. As long as you are as careful as possible, it’s money in the economy - in particular the travel industry which is vital at the moment.

Others might think it’s risky but they might be doing things like ‘just seeing family as they are sick of the rules’. We haven’t gone to a supermarket/big shop/restaurant since March but did go on a European holiday this year...i doubt weve contributed to the spread anymore than anyone else.

Bells3032 · 20/10/2020 11:41

Not being unreasonable wanting one as long as you are willing to take the risks associated with it. and know that medical care if you end up sick with CV when out there is unlikely to be covered and likely to be v expensive.

Also your kids will have to quarentine too on your return. that likely means two weeks off school and then being stuck in the house with nothing to do for two weeks.

Srictlybakeoff · 20/10/2020 11:45

I really want a holiday too, but I’m going to wait. People travelling all over the world have helped to spread the virus so why would you do that unless your journey is necessary .

I would worry about lots of things. You put yourself and the people of the country you are visiting at extra risk. Places might be closed when you get there. If you need repatriation - well , maybe if you have got good insurance the cost will be covered ,but what about the airline staff and the effort that needs to be made to bring you home. I just dont understand the selfishness of it.
But crack on

howaboutchocolate · 20/10/2020 11:54

Your kids would have to quarantine when you get back too so they'd be off school for a long time.

That's best case scenario. Worst case is things are as bad in December as they were in March and you find it difficult to get back in the country at all. Or you all get covid from travelling.

Why do you want to go so far away? Wouldn't it be better to go somewhere you could drive back or train back if you needed to? Or are you just so desperate for sun that you don't give a shit about the consequences?
