Shopping earlier to get a few essentials in a shop i don't often go in so not sure if this is standard practice? Was paying and the guy serving says would you be interested in buying this box of chocolates (£2.50) for the food bank, I was a bit surprised and said, "oh sorry no" he said "I hope I'm not making you feel awkward - we have had other people say no because they can't afford it (??) we do have cheaper items over there, for example pasta is 50p a bag - you can get some of that if you prefer?" Wish I'd have bought the bloody chocolates?? Is this weird or aibu?

Seems so, quite pushy, I’d avoid shop

ViciousJackdaw · 20/10/2020 00:34

That's terrible, some people don't even have 50p to spare. I've never encountered this practice before and if I did then I'd definitely complain.

Anordinarymum · 20/10/2020 00:37

Was this a smaller shop OP? Buying chocolates for the food bank? It sounds to me like he was trying to sell out of date goods and using emotional blackmail to do it.

YerAWizardHarry · 20/10/2020 00:39

I had this recently in New Look when they were collecting their charity by doing so many steps. The way they ask is extremely manipulative and makes it difficult to say no. Said I couldn't today to the sales person and she replied, "you can donate as little as £1 I'm sure you can stretch to that!"

Justmuddlingalong · 20/10/2020 00:41

I would be going in even less often. That's not encouraging folk to donate to the food bank, that's putting them off. He overstepped the line.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 20/10/2020 02:06

That would put me off going to that shop in the future.

Angelina82 · 20/10/2020 03:52

Chocolates for the food bank? Is he having a laugh? Many people are struggling and can’t afford small treats for themselves and if some condescending twat tried to shame me into buying chocolates for the food bank he would be told where he could stick ‘em. Cheeky fucking bastard.

Cbatothinkofausername · 20/10/2020 04:43

I agree with Anordinarymum he may be doing it for the benefit of the shop. I wouldn’t go back myself.

Graciebobcat · 20/10/2020 05:14

He needs to read the Code of Fundraising practice. You aren't allowed to be manipulative and persistent when fundraising.

To think this was pushy?
abstractprojection · 20/10/2020 05:14

So he’s trying to get you to buy his stock to donate to a charity that would be better off with a cash donation anyway as cash doesn’t have storage costs and they can buy in bulk with discounts

emilybrontescorsett · 20/10/2020 05:18

I wouldn't shop there again. I hate this. My response "No I dont, why don't you do it?" Long pregnant pause and wait for his response . I don't buy £2.50 chocolate for myself never mind for a good bank.

queenqueenqueen · 20/10/2020 07:01

It was Farmfoods, I just bought some paint from the shop next door, don't really ever go in. I've been asked at the checkout before in other places "do you want to buy this?" and I think I thought that's what he was going to ask me - yes usually short date stuff!!! Seemed odd to me, and yes don't think ill be going back!!

I had this in TKMAX would you like to donate X? , no thankyou, it's only £1?, I said no, are you sure? I don't donate to big charities I choose who I donate to and your pushy behaviour is inappropriate.

JollyAndBright · 20/10/2020 07:15

It’s exactly the same as when they say they will round up your shop to the nearest £ and donate the difference to charity.

It’s a massive scam on the shops part....

They donate £££££ to charity in their name, which is actually customers money, which they then get tax relief on reducing their tax bill.
So by letting them round up your shopping total you are actually helping them dodge tax.
