I see so many ads for cold medicines at the moment.
aibu to think that those ads should refer to covid testing services and government advice?

Why?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 19/10/2020 20:41

Why? Do you think people might be unaware. Of the global pandemic. That is talked about constantly.

Lazypuppy · 19/10/2020 20:42

Because its autumn and this is when people normally get colds...hence the need for cold medicines.

Asterion · 19/10/2020 20:43

Why should private companies pay to publicise government services?

vanillandhoney · 19/10/2020 20:44

Why? Colds exist regardless of COVID. Plus, I'm kinda fed up with every single advert referencing COVID or masks, tbh.

pinkbalconyrailing · 19/10/2020 20:45

why?
because some cold symtoms are covid-19 symptoms.
and some people are in denial or stupid or both.

Yes you are.

No, people just don't need COVID blasted in their faces 24/7. There are reminders everywhere - if they don't get it by now, an advert for Lemsip isn't going to make a difference.
WhereverIGoddamnLike · 19/10/2020 21:20

Why?
Companies need to pay for every second their ad takes up. Why would they give up ad time to pay for a public service announcement, which the government have already driven home.

If people are too stupid to understand the symptoms by now then they never will.

I've got a stinking cold. I get the same cold this time every year, and it comes with a cough that hangs around for weeks afterwards. I know what I've got, unless COVID has suddenly morphed into my annual autumn cold. I don't need an advert for cough mixture to tell me about COVID thanks.

Pluckedpencil · 19/10/2020 21:21

I work in healthcare marketing and I can tell you that no company in it's right mind would be putting out "advice" about Covid in the context of their cold and flu medicines. The last thing you want to do is group the common cold with the pandemic stuff! For one, you could be seen to be offering a treatment for covid, which we all know doesn't exist in a handy syrup form yet! Healthcare advertising is a minefield and putting in the C word for cold medicine is like dropping a grenade in the middle of your ad.

BlusteryShowers · 19/10/2020 21:31

I think we see and hear enough about it. There is no escape at the moment from this dystopian nightmare.

Anyone who needs a Lemsip advert to tell them that their cough could be Covid surely must have some kind of cognitive impairment.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 19/10/2020 22:26

In addition to what everyone else has said I doubt it would make any difference.
I recently had a stuffy nose and soon after a sore throat. Of course, it crossed my mind that it could be covid but since the symptoms were a perfect fit for a common cold I was satisfied that's what it was. Had I developed a fever or a proper cough I would have arranged for a test. As it stood, I got some over the counter medicines and got on with things.
Cold/flu season is just starting. Do you really want lots of people testing when they only have very typical cold symptoms? Do you think the system could cope.

emptyplinth · 19/10/2020 22:41

Covid... What's that? If only it were on TV more..
..Confused
