To think spaying has changed my dog??

18 month old rescue girl was spayed on Monday. All went fine and she's healing brilliantly - the vet is impressed with her progress.

Since the op she's not stopped whining and crying when left alone! I really don't think it's pain as she had her medication and she's fine when she's with me. Whenever I leave her in another room now she starts howling!

Tonight I'm listening to her in the kitchen crying and whining when she's been quiet as a mouse all evening. She's never been like this before and has always been really settled and quiet at night.

She's also become so naughty - pushing boundaries all the time and it's only been 6 days. She's super hyper and snapped at me today for the first time.

Is this normal?? Aibu to think she's come out of it with issues??

Only speyed a week ago, has she been back to vets? My collie cried a lot too, bring her through to you, she’s possibly in discomfort and needs some comfort.

CSIblonde · 18/10/2020 22:08

If she's a rescue the vets would have been more trauma on top of previous trauma. I'd baby her for a bit. My rescue cat always regresses a little after the vets or firework night. She gets extra fuss & cuddles then is back to her perky self in a few days.

Nottherealslimshady · 18/10/2020 22:10

Well she's probably feeling pretty shit, I would be. Comfort her.

Figgyboa · 18/10/2020 22:20

Agree with posters. Takes at least 2 weeks to recover fully from spaying. Probably a little bit harder on her since she's older (most pups are spayed before 1 year)

Elieza · 18/10/2020 22:20

Yeah she just needs a bit of love. She’s probably scared you will leave her to get hurt by strangers again the way you did before (dropped her off at the vet to get spayed) so she must be near you to be safe.

Poor thing, she’s had a rough start. Glad you’ve given her a home. She should settle soon.

My cat comes into bed with me at night for three nights after a vet visit or she just cries poor girl! After that she’s ok and sleeps downstairs.

I have 2 rescue dogs, one wanted lots of comfort and to be near me all the time for a good 2 - 3 weeks afterwards, the other made a point of ignoring me for a similar period. However if you are worried then do go back to your vet to check everything is OK.

Jokie · 19/10/2020 01:23

Definitely give her time. Maybe check with the vets that she's not in discomfort. My girl refused to eat or drink for 4days and then followed us like shadows for a month. When she realised we weren't leaving and she was safe, she returned to normal. We also put a blanket over her bed/crate and made it into a "den" and she liked that.

It could be she's hyper from lack of exercise? (As you can't walk her a lot post operation?).

stopgap · 19/10/2020 01:28

18 months is the juvenile stage when dogs do test boundaries, so if you rule out pain, it could be a touch of that

TheyreComingToGetYouBarbara · 19/10/2020 01:55

Agree with PP that the traumatic experience of being left at the vet's might be enough to trigger some temporary separation anxiety.

I imagine she'll return to her usual self in time.

All my dogs have been spayed, and none have come out with obvious emotional damage or altered personalities.

Ilovesausages · 19/10/2020 02:08

Our puppy was very whiny after being spayed. I think it lasted around 10 days and she is back to normal how. It’s a big operation and they obviously don’t understand what has happened.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 19/10/2020 03:07

Women don't recover from hysterectomies in one week. Why expect it of your dog. Likely she is in pain and can't tell you except by whining.
Give her regular medication and lots of attention. And be sure to take her back to the vet for suture removal and to prevent adhesions.

Nootkah · 19/10/2020 18:53

She's had her hormone levels changed. She's basically having an enforced early menopause and noone can exain to her why she's feeling weird.

Junkmail · 19/10/2020 19:03

She’s been through a lot. Surgery is always a big deal even if it’s routine or simple (from the human’s POV) so go easy on her. They’re all different. Some bounce right back. Some are more sensitive. When my youngest had a surgery last year he thought he couldn’t walk anymore for THREE DAYS and he had eye surgery so nothing wrong with his legs. He’s very dramatic in general. If you’re really concerned then call your vet again but it’s only been a week and if they site looks good then she’s maybe just still feeling out of sorts about the whole thing.

Crankley · 19/10/2020 19:44

Why has she been shut in a different room to you? She is obviously needing some attention rather than being left to cry.
