To ask how difficult it is to build a curved cabinet?

I want to get a wooden tv cabinet built into this space, lining up with my fireplace and bay window. I think options are:

  1. An L shape
  2. A trapezoid
  3. A curve

See picture.

How difficult is it for a carpenter to create a curve cabinet front (including the door) in wood? Would most carpenters be able to do it or only a specialist?

Also, if you have a cabinet built into a similar space, it would be great if you could send me a picture for inspiration!

Try asking a carpenter.

I want an idea of the answer before I phone a carpenter.

It depends. If you want a shelf with a curve and open shelves underneath then it's not very difficult at all. I imagine it would be far more difficult to have a door on a curve. 1 or 2 would be much more straightforward.

As telephoneaddict says. Curved shelves, you just cut out of a piece of wood, sawing along a curve instead of a straight line.

If you want a door to follow the curve you either a) make it out of lots of narrow vertical slats to approximate the curve or b) you have to steam the door and press it against a former to take up the curved shape. That would be close in appearance to 3 but a whole lot easier.

You could do an intermediate between 2 and 3 - straight as far as where you want the curve to start, then come out an angle from there. So another way of looking at it would be an L shape with the sharp corner cut off.

Thanks MereDintofPandiculation that's helpful. Our previous house had an inbuilt cabinet with a curved door so I knew it was possible, but it was installed by a previous owner so I don't know who did it.

Managed to find a photo of the one in our old house.

You need to ask a professional, preferably independent, carpenter or cabinet maker. A good one will be able to sort this for you.

Curves are much more complex and therefore more expensive. Which is understandable but also very frustrating as I much prefer curves.
