Words and phrases that you can't stand...

What words and phrases irrationally (or rationally!) annoy you.

Mine are:
'Doggo' - DP uses this all the time, why make the word 'dog' longer
'No is a complete sentence' - just sounds so dismissive and I doubt anyone IRL would talk like this
'That doesnt work for us' - just sounds rude
'Little man' to describe a boy
'Hubby' - this is irrational as loads of people say this
'Boils my piss' - conjours horrible images in my head Grin
'Move on' when talking about a bad situation - yeah, because the person with the problem really hasn't thought about that Hmm...
'It is what it is' - one if those phrases that seemed to spawn from Love Island, I dont know why I hate it.

Any more?

I hate the word jizz. There was a thread recently in the conception area and it has the word 'Jizz' in the title. I had to hide it in the end, it made me want to throw up.

Also, hate 'Each to their own'. I find it really smug as the person is usually suggesting that your life/choices etc are shit but hey 'Each to their own'

Operation Moonshot makes me cringe too.

So blessed (from people who aren't at all religious. Who's doing their imaginary blessing and why are they special?)
Got it off someone (got it FROM)
Little man (about a baby.)
We are pregnant (speaks for itself)

It's cheeky, not sneaky!
LadyWithLapdog · 18/10/2020 17:52

‘Moving forward’ Just where did this hideous, nothingy place marker, come from?

‘To be fair’ especially when what comes after bears no relationship with what was before. Eg “today is Sunday and, to be fair, my name is Mary”.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/10/2020 17:53

Snowflake (s)

Kids with CDH are snowflakes (or at least for one Christmas fundraising ideas 🤣) because they're all different but amazing. I love that.

But then I joined Mumsnet and heard it used as an insult to basically describe anyone the op thinks isn't as good/worthy/string/willing to put up with shit etc

doloresclaiborne · 18/10/2020 17:53

Let me explain (no don’t bother, I’m not stupid)
Stay home (if you must say this, then say stay AT home)
People in the media who say that people need to be “educated”. I don’t know why but I always replace “educated” with “brainwashed” when I hear this sentence.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 18/10/2020 17:53

Gifting! No one says I gave them a toy they I gifted them a toy.

CeliaCanth · 18/10/2020 17:53

“Gifted”, as in “I was gifted this lovely mauve nylon balaclava”. No, it’s “given”.

Unprecedented times

Global pandemic, especially when used with the phrase “you are so unreasonable! Don’t you know there’s a global pandemic on!”

Smash it! (Work use this a lot. “We are gonna smash it today”)

Social distancing

WaterOffADucksCrack · 18/10/2020 17:55

CeliaCanth Jinx!

JustDavesWife · 18/10/2020 17:58

Any kind of baby talk, just talk to them normally! There's a Mum at school who asks her kid if he wants a "bic bic" or "biccy"!

Calling kids little man, little lady, Prince or princess.

Other half/hubby/hubs

Cheeky vino!

Fur baby!

pilates · 18/10/2020 17:58

Smashed it 😬

SneakyNandos · 18/10/2020 17:59

Thanks.

FatimaMunchy · 18/10/2020 17:59

'In all this' as in 'Where's Joe in all this?'.

LadyWithLapdog · 18/10/2020 18:00

@SleepingStandingUp “snowflake” is a horrible insult but not specific to MN. I first heard it used by right-wingers to ridicule people who aren’t as horrible as they are. I think it was about Brexit-time, so a few good years ago now. Alongside “facts don’t care for your feelings” and other such vileness.

jajabanks · 18/10/2020 18:02
